VFX Techniques: Creating a CG Flag with After Effects

(Sound on!) Long time no see. Just finished up a new Lighting/FX-project and figured I would share it. :) Trying out embedding the video directly, hopefully quality turns out ok. If not, as always, the full video as well as a little breakdown can be found on my artstation: https://lnkd.in/egS6jyvA When I found the "Ithris Cemetery" environment (by Rasmus Bagner) I felt I just had to give it a go and make something dark and gritty. I tried to keep the lighting as soft and simple as possible, to give some more focus on the VFX. FX and FX materials were made by me, except for falling leaves and background fog cards from the original scene. Animation and character from Mixamo.

Checkout this multimedia extravaganza I Directed + Art Directed for fighting game Youtube legend Super https://lnkd.in/gJE8utN4 I've always treasured YouTube intros as a format that prioritises experimentation, fun, and quality. It's a creative playground where I can test storytelling ideas and treatment designs. The real challenge is conveying complex, epic stories clearly and effectively in just 15-20 seconds. The concept here was to celebrate some of Supers favourite IPs. The overall narrative structure and multimedia approach was inspired by Mob Psycho 100. Mob Psycho 100 constantly jumps between many hand drawn styles, so a big aesthetic goal was to mirror this. As the intro progresses, the visuals get increasingly rough and hand drawn to mirror the intensity. A robust arsenal of techniques were key: 3D, 2.5D, 2D, anime, illustration. I whipped up a short scene to practice my lighting, composition, and camera rigging chops as I start creating more assets for my portfolio. The character was downloaded from mixamo. I created the scene in Blender and rendered it with classic EEVEE. It took ~30 minutes to render the scene. I also created the foley audio and soundtrack using Logic Pro X. The whole project took around 2 hours, including the audio and render times. I realize that my mathematical research tends to lack elements of storytelling, so I am going to see how I can combine my procedural animations with this more traditional approach in future renders. #3danimation #animation #shortfilm #cutscene #mixamo #blender #render #soundtrack #composer #foley #lighting #camerarigging #3dartist

Visual effects is the process by which imagery is created or manipulated outside the context of a live-action shot in filmmaking and video production. The integration of live-action footage and other live-action footage or CGI elements to create realistic imagery is called VFX. VFX involves the integration of live-action footage (which may include in-camera special effects) and generated-imagery (digital or optics, animals or creatures) which look realistic, but would be dangerous, expensive, impractical, time-consuming or impossible to capture on film. After spending many years working in feature film production, I transitioned to the world of Visual Effects (VFX). However, I quickly discovered that my usual bag of tricks was insufficient; in VFX, the artistry lies in subtlety, naturalism, and technical accuracy. Consider a scenario: if a character weighs 95KG and faces a 20km/h wind while only being able to control the top part of their tentacles, the movement must adhere to these parameters with precision. This level of technical correctness is paramount, akin to the standards set in the Star Wars universe, where established rules guide audience engagement. In essence, mastering animation is just the beginning; understanding and meeting the specific demands of clients present an even greater challenge.

If there is a video you need to watch this week, its this one by Crafthive Creative The VFX industry is (still) facing major challenges, it has been for a while, but its worse today than ever before. You may recall the demise of award winning studio Rhythm & Hues, lest we forget "Life of PI". This has been going on for way to long, Increasing workloads, low balling bids, tight deadlines, "Pixel f🤬kery", out sourcing for cheaper labour and financial struggles, all while keeping up with the demand for high-quality visual effects and artistry. The reliance on underpaid and overworked artists is unsustainable. It's time for better working conditions, fair compensation, and sustainable practices to ensure the future of VFX. I've lived it, I've loved it, but it needs to change... We need to create more discourse around this topic, and by doing so, hopefully we can push and create for the necessary changes to protect the foundation of the industry; the passionate artists and developers who are doing the work! #animation #VFX #film
