The advice "never work for free" is often given to emphasize the importance of valuing your skills, time, and expertise. It encourages individuals, particularly those in creative or professional fields, to recognize and assert the value of their work. While there are exceptions, and circumstances may vary, here are a few reasons why this advice is often provided: 👨💼 Professionalism and Value: Working for free can sometimes undermine the perceived value of your skills and expertise. Clients and employers may be less likely to appreciate your work if they haven't invested anything in it. 🌟 Establishing a Standard: Accepting unpaid work can contribute to a culture where people are expected to provide their services without compensation. This can make it difficult for others in the same field to negotiate fair compensation for their work. 💵 Financial Considerations: For many people, work is a means of livelihood. Working for free might not be a sustainable model for a professional or a business. 👍 Quality of Work: In some cases, the lack of compensation may lead to a lack of motivation, potentially affecting the quality of the work delivered. That said, there are instances where working for free might be justifiable or beneficial, especially in the early stages of a career when gaining experience and building a portfolio is crucial. Additionally, contributing to charitable causes, open-source projects, or collaborations with friends for mutual benefit are situations where working for free may have positive outcomes. Ultimately, the key is to make informed decisions about when and why you choose to work for free, ensuring that it aligns with your goals and values. It's essential to weigh the potential benefits against the costs and consider the impact on both your professional reputation and financial well-being.

Saving Developers and Principal Contractors Tens of Thousands of Pounds on Utility Diversions Working with the Diversionary Works Code and the New Roads and Street Works Act 1991 (NRSWA)
This morning we were on a call with one of the UKs largest #Councils. They spent £1.7m on a #diversion over a year ago and they managed after 11 months of battling with the utility company, receiving just recently £600k of that monies back. 😲 What an #overcharge that was !!!! 💸💸💸 They don’t have the time and resource to keep battling on diversions with #utilitycompanies that just seem to give them the ‘run-around’ throwing ‘jargon’ at the client and telling them they have no case. 😡😡😡 Not responding to client letters when the client asks for the detail (rightly so) on what they have actually been charged for as their quotation (C3, C4) is so vague, and the utility company doesn’t respond. 😡😡😡 It is physically and mentally demoralising. They have a further £3.6m in #diversions and wanted to know if we could help and if so, what would we do that would be any different. Here are the three main areas that we are different and no one in the UK is currently offering this type of service for reasons I won’t bore you with here; 1. You have to know how to talk to utilities companies and use the correct language. 2. You have to understand the detail of the #NewRoadsandStreetWorksAct 1991 (#NRSWA) to align their quotation with that text. 3. You have to understand which part or section of the #NRSWA you are applying to the utilities company under with your questioning and with that, they legally have to respond with a specific amount of time which we will specify according to the law – there are time constraints involved or fines can apply. Once you are adept at these three things, the utilities companies; 1. Will respond 2. Will reduce your #quotation or #reimburse you…. …. under the #governinglaws that are in place to protect you, the #highways, our #countryside and #publicmoney. Suffice to say we are now helping this #Council as a ‘Specialist Auditing Partner’ on #Diversions of which, although they have a lot of project resource, no one knows how to engage formerly with the utilities companies on their behalf for a successful and agreeable outcome for all stakeholders. If you have any current Diversions, DO NOT PAY THEM, until you have engaged us. Within 5-10 days, we will give you a fast assessment on any diversion BEFORE you instruct us to proceed or not. It costs you nothing, you re in full control and there is #ZERO risk involved. Help your pocket and the environment by doing your due diligence... 💚💚💚💰💰💰 Get in touch for our Diversionary Works – Best Practice Guide worth £399.00 that can help you understand some of the detail behind these works and how you can save literally, tens of thousands of pounds and put your savings and resources to better use. Call / Text / WhatsApp: 07803 484417 or book a meeting with us here: https://bit.ly/3RFp2Fk If you work for any #LocalCouncil, please forward on this message and lets keep the costs of diversions which come from the taxpayers pocket as low as possible.

The habit this sector has of rolling people up like a toothpaste tube to squeeze everything we can out of them before discarding them is obviously unsustainable to anyone who cares to look at the issue. We have to do better by our workers, and that's going to mean not only better compensation and benefits but also hiring more of them, something I'm sure is daunting to the people who have to fund a full organizational budget every year. But if it's worth it for our mission, why isn't it worth it for our people? https://lnkd.in/enFSRVSu

In the first month of the year, it's good to examine how you are going to show up in the new year. A great way to do that is to identify your service mark. Your service mark is how you uniquely show up in service (work, volunteering, family, life). It is a signature assessment tool for finding your social, business, ministry, career and artistic mark. I know many people start their new year with resolutions that are the result of some sort of assessment of where they are in life at the end of a previous year. Resolutions may come about because of unrealized potential, unattained goals and unachieved results. There are probably just as many reasons for them as there are resolutions. The focus should not only be on the resolutions. We should also evaluate every place we are at the beginning of each new year. Why? You may find that you need to make some changes, especially in the place where you serve. Here are simple questions to ask yourself: Is this an organization where I should continue to serve? Do I still believe strongly enough about this organization and its mission to serve or can I support it in a different manner? Did anything change last year that has shifted my thoughts and if so, what do I do now? Do I still feel that what I have to offer is valued here? How can I enhance my service to this organization? Let me know your thoughts on this in the comments. What is your service mark? If you know me well, which mark would you say best defines me? #newyear #resolutions #goals #goalsetting #servicemark #service #identifyingyourservicemark

This is the first I've read about restorative compensation. #AlwaysLearning https://lnkd.in/eyy22VJv "More and more, nonprofits need to reimagine and restructure their compensation models. In our work, we use the term “restorative compensation,” a system that restores labor that is undervalued and unseen and invites people to treat the employer-employee relationship as a consensual exchange, not a contractual exchange or extractive commodity." Along a labor continuum, this moves compensation systems from a dominance-centered to a liberatory-centered frame.

The Value of Scarcity! Growing up as a gentle child, I observed alot and I wanted to know why certain things happen. I watched the relationship between adults, between the poor and the rich. I understood the concept behind the saying 'the rich don't like the poor'. The poor are naturally humble. Maybe humbled by life circumstances but they somehow want to look appealing to the rich. That sort of saying that 'poor man no suppose geh pride'. So they go on and about doing things simple things to feel seen or accepted by the rich. Some of these little things may include running errands, doing the dishes or just hanging around as an hand bag to the rich. While I'm not trying to talk down on serving or volunteering, I believe so much in self respect and I don't joke with it. Sometimes these act of kind service may not come willingly from the heart but man has to do what man has to do...you know! Sometimes, the poor do it thinking that one day they will be favoured or respected by the rich but life is never always like that. Life has some sort of principles which may include: 🩸The absence of money in one's life doesn't mean lack of confidence in oneself. You can lack money and still have your dignity intact. Money maybe be absence but your self respect should not be missing. The best way to earn the respect of the rich is never by picking their toiletries or doing the most dirty job. No dear, they don't even see you. 🩸The best way to make people look at you twice and place value on you is by how good you're at what you do. (That's if you have what to do). Lobbying around rich people is the easiest way to get frustrated. Only if your lobbying has so much value (not washing of plates). Even if you have so much value to offer (except you're volunteering to sharpen your skill or to serve), sometimes be scarce. I have a principle of 'make your value known, yet withdraw (be absent) from time to time' if you notice a form of disrespect. If you make your value known, people may not necessarily know the void you feel until they feel the consequences of your absence. 🩸 Lastly, in life face your job. Nobody respect anyone who's too available. Everyone will pick themselves first, so it is never about 'who hates who'. The person who you think is a saviour also has loads of responsibility and people who they prefer over you. So, identify those who place priority on you. Do not spoil the relationship with too much familiarity. There's no yardstick for who's poor or rich, everyone needs more money even if they are earning well. So face your life. Yoruba will say, tepa mo se e. Anywhere you sense disrespect, just move and be scarce. Not everyone will know your value and not everyone is a recipient of what you've got to offer. Oyindamola Sedara.

Have you ever pondered what makes someone truly successful? For me, achieving success as a freelancer goes beyond just hitting financial targets. Here are a few key principles I've focused on since day one: ↳ 𝙂𝙞𝙫𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝘽𝙖𝙘𝙠: I set aside a portion of every project for charity. Trust me, it's an investment that pays off tenfold (or maybe even more!). Helping others creates a positive cycle of generosity. ↳ 𝗘𝗺𝗽𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗢𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿𝘀: I believe in lifting others as we rise. Sharing my knowledge with fellow freelancers, especially beginners, is incredibly rewarding. ↳ 𝗦𝘁𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗴 𝗙𝗮𝗺𝗶𝗹𝘆 𝗙𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: Taking care of my parents and loved ones is a priority. A supportive network at home fuels my drive to succeed in my career. ↳ 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗣𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗿 𝗼𝗳 𝗚𝗶𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗴: Success isn't just about what you get, but what you give. Whether it's sharing your expertise, offering kind words, or simply lending a helping hand, contributing to others' lives brings more fulfillment than you can imagine. Is there anything that you found helpful in being successful in your career? Please share. #successinfreelancing #tips #givingback

No one is on their death bed thinking: “I wish I spent more time at the office.” You Are Not Your Work Throughout my life, I relentlessly pursued empty titles, promotions, and commendations. I would scour job listings and opportunities based on these superficial markers and try to mold my life around my work. Unfortunately, after enduring twelve-hour workdays, there wasn't much "left" when I finally got home. But today, my perspective has shifted. I've reordered my priorities to focus on what truly matters to me: My family (including the friends who have become my chosen family). Faith (nurturing my relationship with God). Helping people (dedicating myself to serving others). Freedom (taking charge of my destiny by starting my own business). Gone are the days of chasing after workplace accolades. Instead, I've honed in on what brings me genuine happiness and fulfillment. My core values now serve as my guiding principles, shaping the very foundation of my business. For instance, I used to spend a staggering 80% of my time traveling in my previous roles. When I constructed my own business, I deliberately designed a structure that allowed me to reduce travel by taking on virtual clients. Even when I do travel for speaking engagements, I often bring along my husband and daughter to ensure that I'm not sacrificing precious family time. My husband recently shared this saying with me: kids have a different spelling of the four letter love then us. For them, love is spelled T-I-M-E. Moreover, as I built my company, I envisioned a business that could assist those who couldn't afford my services. This led me to launch a YouTube channel, offering free content to help a wider audience. And recently, I released a book to help people in their journey to find, and more importantly, live their purpose. My paid corporate training and key note speaking fees help fund my other non-paid services. And when times get rough, which it often does, I repeat my mantra: In the relentless pursuit of earning a living, never forget to build a life worth living. Love, Lan Phan community of SEVEN Excerpt from my book Do This Daily. Out now, purchase anywhere books are sold.
