A lot of people ask me why I chose investment banking at the start of my career. I genuinely did not have an answer to that but as I reflect back upon, it was definitely the best decision in the hindsight. Some of my key takeways : 1) Peer Group and Network - Got the opportunity to work with some of best minds in the country who are all good friends now. There is so much that you can learn from each other especially when you spend so much time in the office together 2) Stakeholder Management - Definitely a very underrated skill but is used in every job that one is in 3) Deal Expertise - You learn to structure, negotiate, and execute complex financial deals 4) Teamwork and Collaboration - You work effectively in diverse teams under tight deadlines 5) Communication Skills - You learn to articulate complex ideas clearly to diverse stakeholders. Today you can put in a room of CXOs and I will not hesitate to share my opinion 6) Market Insights - You gain deep industry knowledge and stay ahead of market trends 7) Dealing with Complexities - IB makes you very resilient and you will not be afraid to deal with uncertainties as you will be thrown into something new on a daily basis 8) Financial Independence - Definitely one of the biggest perks especially with big bonuses that you get From a career perspective, diving into investment banking offers an unparalleled opportunity for growth, challenge, and impact. A lot of people feel that you need to have a deep understanding of finance to get into it but I feel its more about the right learning attitude as everything can be taught on the job. So one should just go out there and experiment and see whats best for you. #nomura #investmentbanking #stakeholdermanagement #careerdecision

Chartered Accountants – future-proof and agile? https://lnkd.in/dCKf7Gt7 Bhavna Gounder CA(SA) | Senior Director | Financial Services | Canada | BMO Commercial Bank | Having recently moved from Johannesburg to Toronto I have fielded a flurry of questions from colleagues and if I’m being honest, around the weight of our qualification. Can we have both global mobility and success? Are we future-proofed? Do we need to reinvent ourselves to remain agile? The definition of an accountant is a person whose job is to keep, inspect, and analyse financial accounts − truly uninspiring to believe that we are considered mere record keepers. Thankfully, as history unfolded, accountancy and more specifically chartered accountancy has become an integral part of doing responsible business... #charteredaccountant #professional #accountant #agility #ethics The South African Institute of Chartered Accountants (SAICA) Bhavna G. Pull up a log, I have a story to tell, it's somewhat long so I'll apologise now. When I was a lad (not this one again grandpa) I was incredibly lucky to have been taken onto an international trainee scheme with one of the large Australian banks. This was after 4 years working in the trade finance department of that bank. The scheme involved short tenures with various different parts of that bank until I was eventually channeled into a specialised Treasury role. Even then, I had to spend time in vostro accounts management, nostro accounts reconciliation, settlements, middle office, position keeping, then finally the dealing room. I could not just originate risk, I knew the control and operational process surrounding my job and during my career all that knowledge let me cover a wide range of skills at varying levels of competency, most of which came in handy at some stage or other to whichever institution I currently worked for. However, it was invaluable when I became a regulator. Poacher turned gamekeeper provided a new perspective for both the Central Bank I worked for and the Banks I regulated. Within months of starting I found myself in the middle of the Solo Industries fraud (look it up, interesting case study) and that time spent in Trade Finance knowing what UCP was came to the fore, during the Global Financial Crisis my Treasury and liquidity knowledge meant problems were spotted quickly and solutions immediately targeted at the weaknesses. The whole system benefitted. Where's this going? I'll tell you. Since leaving the regulator I've had the chance to work closely with several banks, particularly with their second line of defence (compliance and risk management). One story sums up my concern, I was interviewing an obviously very bright young girl working in compliance and responsible for regulatory compliance within Treasury. She had no idea how balance sheets worked, exchange rates worked or what a derivative was. She was exceptionally bright and within half an hour with her we had the basics down, even though this was way outside my remit. I couldn't believe it, imagine the improvement in the effectiveness of her role and value to the bank if she'd just spent a month in the dealing room. I'm 100% sure she would go from a competent resource to a superstar. Why aren't institutions training their staff? Where are they expecting to get their next generation of leaders from? It makes absolutely no sense.
