🎙️This past week, the OVPRI and the Collaborative Digital Research Space (CDRS) co-hosted a lively conversation on research creation, and we welcomed researchers working in the fine arts, humanities, and social sciences from across #UofT. Pinch the image below to check out some top tips and takeaways from the session! 🎨 Sketchnote by Danielle Taschereau Mamers, Managing Director of the Critical Digital Humanities Initiative. You can find more of her creative note-taking and zines on Instagram at @the__dtm. #utm #utsc #ResearchCreation #Research #Sketchnotes #VisualNotes
Research creation is one of my very favorite places to spend my time, energy, and creativity. Research creation covers a wide array of practices that combine a scholarly apparatus with creative, literary, or artistic methods. Often collaborative and always innovative, research creation moves beyond typical peer-reviewed writing. These kinds of projects can include collaborations with artists, filmmaking, community-based arts programs, arts-based inquiry, and so much more. Research creation is a powerful way of moving research beyond the university. To me, research creation opens new, interesting, and collaborative approaches to research impact and public scholarship. It was my pleasure to join colleagues from University of Toronto to discuss supports for research creation within the university and funding opportunities available through SSHRC-CRSH. Thank you Kate Steinmann, Tia Sager, Elizabeth Parke, Lilia Topouzova, and Julia MacArthur for an energizing conversation. And of course, I was sketchnoting the session. #Research #ResearchCreation Research Impact Canada #Academia #GraphicFacilitation #Sketchnotes

Fine Arts Consultant with expertise in Enrollment Management, and Independent Educational Consultant--Music Admissions Specialist
"What's the point of studying the arts and humanities? The sciences, business, and tech are all so much more important these days." As IECs, we get this question quite a bit from students, parents, and others who don't see the value in subjects that might be unfamiliar to them. While I was touring Southwestern University, one of my IEC colleagues posed this exact question to the President of SU, Dr. Laura Skandera Trombley, She herself is an English major, and a leading expert on Mark Twain, and has been a college president for over 15 years. How do we answer this question in a relatable way? Dr. Trombley had an amazing thought experiment: "Imagine you're on a super long flight, maybe 16-17 hours long. This particular airline doesn't have any movies for you to watch. There's no music, no books, no magazines, no games, nothing to entertain you. How *fun* does this flight sound to you?" The point is that the arts and humanities are like the oxygen we breathe. They've become such an intrinsic part of our lives that we barely notice them, until we take them away. (You sure would miss air if you suddenly didn't have it anymore!) This is what the arts does for us. It's part of the fabric of our lives, our communities, our cultures. Why on earth does this not hold value? Take a moment this week to notice the arts around you. Do you find yourself humming along to the music at the grocery store? Do you have a favorite wall mural in your city? What nursery rhymes and songs do you sing to your kids every night? What are their favorite bedtime stories? So, the next time someone questions the importance of studying the arts and humanities, invite them to imagine a world stripped of its music, stories, and visual wonders. It's a stark reality that prompts us to appreciate the profound impact these subjects have on our daily experiences. The arts aren't just optional; they're the heartbeat of our shared humanity. #artsandculture #humanities #valueofthearts #collegeadmissions #collegecounseling

This lecture is a part of my effort as an art historian and an academic to foster ways of looking at visual histories through so-called niche perspectives. It was first delivered at AUD in the SOAS faculty lecture series. With some additions, it was later presented at "Imagining Asian Art in Transition: Symposium on Modern and Contemporary Asian Art" at USM, Penang. Another edited version was presented at XII International Conference on Critical Education, 3-6 July 2024, at Ankara University. As a scholar who is invested in decolonial methodologies, the repetition of the topic is intentional. The process of decolonization and nurturing of Global Art Histories is the most pressing need for the discipline. Presenting the lecture to a diverse audience globally allows me to initiate a dialogue locally at various regional venues, where it can be further explored, especially on an undergrad level. Because the process of critical thinking should start early. The final version of this lecture would be published in the ADAC Research Journal of UHE.

Happy to contribute to the latest issue of Dichotomy Student Journal UDM SACD with my article, 'From Social Condensers to Microrayons'. In this essay I explore microrayons as places for gathering while comparing them to Ginzburg’s social condensers, something I mention a lot in my writing. This was an opportunity to further explore some of the ideas I have already touched upon in my thesis. Here's a small excerpt: "The architectural world is oversaturated with buzz terms like building a community or promoting social interaction, but nowhere has it been taken so literally as in the Soviet Union. After the revolution and adoption of socialist form of governance they had the task of developing a new typology for a new type of society with a completely new set of ideals. Now a space for gathering was needed. Soviet Constructivists described it as a social condenser - a structure that would help its residents to embody the socialist ideals, shedding the old hierarchies and promoting personal development. However, investigating Soviet-era housing in Post-Soviet states, more specifically microrayons, it seems like they are more for passing through than lingering. So what happened to the idea of socially equitable spaces? Were ideological errors or execution at fault?" You can read the full issue here: https://lnkd.in/dpJCZE_F

Assistant Professor at Yuanzhi University, Taiwan. Art consultant, Liu Qiwei Cultural and Art Foundation, Artist Taipei, Taiwan
My doctoral dissertation, "Cultural Intermediary Platform and Expansion of Arts Education: A Case Study of the Independent Administrative Institution National Museum of Art in Japan" has had nearly 2,000 hits on the Taiwan-based PhD and Masters Dissertation website(https://lnkd.in/g3RE7jmB) in the time between its completion in June 2023 and the present time. The doctoral dissertation will not be opened until 2027 because of the confidentiality agreement with Japan. For this dissertation, I have re-examined the literature, in addition to exploring the artist as a cultural intermediary, and published it in international journals (it is currently peer-reviewed). I have re-examined the international literature and cross-referenced and clarified the theories of the cultural intermediary in light of the current theories of the cultural intermediary and the doubts about them. Furthermore, I have also defined the definition of the cultural intermediary is, the system of the independent administrative corporation in Japan, and the expansion of the art education of art in Museums of Fine Arts. The original value of the book lies in the treatment of Japanese culture and its unique notion of fine art, how to create a mechanism for the operation of the Independent Administrative Institution National Museum of Art in Japan, so that it can enter into such important issues as the creation of art by culture (life) or the creation of culture (life) by art, the creation of education by art (form) or the creation of art (form) by education, the creation of the notion of art by the mode of cultural governance, and the creation of the mode of cultural governance by the notion of art. The concept of art creates the cultural governance model. The book that extends from the thesis is being edited closely with the publisher. I also invite well-known experts and scholars in Taiwan and Japan to be highly recommended. Book publishing can't be casual. Since I chose to publish it, it needs time to be slowly and carefully stacked. #franshals #GirlReading
