Why Fast Fashion is not the Way Forward? As supporters of sustainability and fashion enthusiasts, Gen-Z is quite concerned about the harm that fast fashion does to the environment and society. Fast fashion has a high price in terms of ecology and ethics, even though it is affordable and trendy. Fast fashion is largely to blame for environmental deterioration, from chemical contamination and excessive water use to the overabundance of textile waste that ends up in landfills. Furthermore, the poor pay and hazardous working conditions for labourers in underdeveloped nations highlight the widespread unethical behaviours in this sector. Nonetheless, sustainability holds out hope. Brands may lessen these negative effects by using eco-friendly materials, enforcing fair labour standards, and employing circular fashion models. A route to lessening environmental damage and encouraging social responsibility in the fashion business is through sustainability. Customers are a major force behind this transformation. We have the ability to make a significant impact on the industry by supporting sustainable products and engaging in mindful consumption. We can demand ethical behaviour and openness in order to create a fashion industry that respects people and the environment. Together, let's build a more promising and sustainable future for the fashion industry. By working together, we can redefine what it means to be fashionable. INSIDE THE FASHION INDUSTRY - The Circular Economy: Redefining Production and Consumption Welcome to the first "INSIDE THE FASHION INDUSTRY" blog of 2024! I hope you have high expectations for this blog series because I have a great selection of content planned for this year. To start, I want to discuss a topic that affects everyone in this industry—whether you are already in the market selling your clothing line or still contemplating taking the first step and starting your own fashion brand. The last couple of years have witnessed a noteworthy shift in the industry's focus, departing from the conventional linear model of production and consumption to a more sustainable and environmentally responsible framework. The concept of the circular economy has emerged as a guiding principle for fashion brands looking to mitigate the industry's environmental impact and has made a significant impression on emerging designers who have adopted the "slow fashion" business model with the intention of transitioning into a more cost-effective and sustainable production. This blog delves into the transformative journey of the fashion industry towards embracing these circular practices, exploring how brands are redefining production and consumption to cultivate a more sustainable and circular fashion ecosystem. Turning tech-wary fashion veterans into digital fashion enthusiasts. Because the future of fashion needs both. | Keynote Speaker & Fashion Geek
🌿 Why isn't sustainable fashion the top choice for customers yet? There's a lot of buzz around sustainable fashion. Yet, despite nobody openly preferring fast fashion, big-name fast-fashion brands are worth millions, while sustainable brands remain niche. 🤔 It partly comes down to the cost of sustainable garments. Many people choose to buy multiple cheaper items instead of one well-made, ethically produced piece. So, brands that need to pay their workers often opt for less expensive, non-sustainable solutions. We need to break this cycle. 🔄 But how can we do that? We need to educate both brands and customers simultaneously. Sure, there's a lot of talk about sustainable fashion, but the approach to communication seems off. 📊 About 80% of posts on sustainable fashion focus on negative statistics, criticizing fast fashion. This negativity doesn't have the same impact as positivity could. Instead of saying, "Avoid non-sustainable brands," we should encourage "supporting sustainable ones." let's highlight the positive aspects of ethical production, circularity, and sustainability. We need to make it cool and desirable. 🌍 Rather than sharing gloomy stories about our dying planet, let's celebrate people proudly supporting the environment and communities through conscious purchasing. I believe positivity has a FAR more significant impact than negativity. 🌟 Do you think a shift in our communication strategy towards sustainable fashion could make it more appealing to customers? 🔁 Could a higher demand for sustainable products prompt fashion brands to adopt sustainable practices more quickly? #SustainableFashion #EthicalChoices #FashionForGood #PositiveChange

"60% of sustainability claims by European fashion giants are " unsubstantiated " and " misleading ". (Changing markets Foundation 2021)" This is one of the first statistics we can find in The Sustainable Fashion Communication Playbook published by UN Environment Program. This playbook highlights the new role of fashion communicators in making big changes happen, pointing out that so far communication is an under-addressed area even if it is a key factor into making the fashion industry more sustainable. If you're working in communication or in sustainability, I invite you to go check it out if you haven't read it yet. https://lnkd.in/gZJ8z7dy

The fashion industry’s impact on the environment is substantial, and understanding how this impact is made is crucial to making better choices and pushing for more ethical practices. Understanding Sustainability is the first article in my book “You Are Sustainable.” It goes into the phases of a garment life cycle and how sustainability is impacted in each phase. https://lnkd.in/gHTjWsGx

True fashion respects the Earth. Sustainable fashion isn’t just a trend—it’s a responsibility. As the fashion industry continues to evolve, the impact of fast fashion becomes more apparent. This model thrives on overproduction, waste, and the exploitation of both labor and natural resources. Fast fashion is unsustainable by design, prioritizing speed and low costs over quality, ethics, and environmental care. Sustainable fashion, on the other hand, takes a holistic view. It’s not just about choosing eco-friendly fabrics or using recycled materials. It’s about rethinking the entire process of creating and consuming clothing. Sustainable fashion considers the full life cycle of a garment—from sourcing materials to production, distribution, and even how we dispose of or repurpose clothes. By embracing sustainable practices, we address multiple challenges at once. Environmentally, we reduce pollution, cut down on waste, and conserve resources. Socially, we support fair labor practices, ensuring that the people who make our clothes work in safe conditions and receive a fair wage. Economically, sustainable fashion encourages local production and innovation, helping to foster new technologies and business models. As consumers, we have the power to drive change. Each purchase we make is a vote for the kind of world we want to live in. By choosing sustainable fashion, we’re not only protecting the planet, but we’re also supporting a future where fashion is a force for good—one that respects both the people and resources involved. Let’s make sure the garments we wear tell a story of responsibility, ethics, and respect. Fashion doesn’t have to come at the expense of the Earth or its people. #SustainableFashion #EthicalFashion #SlowFashion #ConsciousConsumer #CircularEconomy #FairTrade #EcoFriendlyFashion #EndFastFashion #ZeroWasteFashion #FashionForTheFuture

The beauty of conducting a thesis: Often, our minds perceive things subjectively, and we tend to consider things in the familiar ways our brains are accustomed to. Having dedication to research gives me a chance to deeply investigate a broad and significant topic. For instance, I used to think that thrifting and using second-hand clothing was a sustainable fashion practice. However, as I have been conducting my thesis on sustainable fashion, I have realized that thrifting has little to no direct relation to sustainable fashion, ethical fashion, or slow fashion. While slow fashion and ethical fashion focus heavily on the production and consumption aspects—ensuring that the production process is ethical and socially responsible, and that consumption is mindful and minimized due to the high quality of clothing pieces—thrifting, on the other hand, primarily reduces clothes ending up in landfills. However, shopping for items you don't truly need is not synonymous with sustainability. The principles of REDUCE, REUSE, and RECYCLE are more aligned with sustainable consumption. Reusing what you already have and recycling responsibly contribute more significantly to sustainability. Conducting this thesis is a good way to remind me to try my best not to think subjectively about things and to develop my critical thinking based on reading literature reviews and gathering sources from different points of view. Thanks to the process, I have honed my ability to scrutinize complex issues, challenge preconceived notions, and draw evidence-based conclusions. #criticalthinking #objectivelythinking #slowconsumption #secondhandclothing #slowfashion
