Unlike most January months in Australia, the legal sector is already very busy for January 2024. An M&A revival is happening with law firms already seeing a significant increase in deal flow and instructions as private equity firms make moves to invest in Australia and large corporates see business opportunities for growth. The effect of this is significant growth in a variety of legal specialisations which were not as busy in 2023. We already have received a number of new partner level instructions from law firms seeking to strategically grow at a national level in a variety of areas. A small example of some of the partner level opportunities we are instructed include: - Corporate partner - top tier national firm - Melbourne ⁃ Projects partner - global firm - Sydney ⁃ Head of Technology - global firm - Sydney ⁃ Corporate Energy partner & team - Brisbane - strong national firm ⁃ Competition partner & team - top tier global firm - Sydney & Melbourne - Employment partner - strong national firm - Sydney & Melbourne If you are a partner or special counsel who is considering a career change for future for 2024 and would like to find out a bit more about the legal sector and areas of growth and demand, please get in touch. 📈 𝗟𝗼𝗻𝗱𝗼𝗻’𝘀 𝗟𝗲𝗴𝗮𝗹 𝗟𝗮𝗻𝗱𝘀𝗰𝗮𝗽𝗲: 𝗔 𝗦𝘂𝗿𝗴𝗲 𝗶𝗻 𝗟𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗹 𝗛𝗶𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 📈 A recent Law.com article has shed light on the improving legal recruitment market - lateral hiring has experienced its busiest first half in five years. With close to 300 hires, this trend marks a significant shift and highlights the key takeaways and implications for both firms and lawyers. 𝗞𝗲𝘆 𝗧𝗮𝗸𝗲𝗮𝘄𝗮𝘆𝘀 • 𝗜𝗻𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗲 𝗶𝗻 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗲𝘁𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗧𝗼𝗽 𝗧𝗮𝗹𝗲𝗻𝘁. The legal industry in the City is witnessing fierce competition for the very best talent. Firms are not just seeking to expand arbitrarily, but are strategically positioning themselves to gain a competitive edge over their peers. • 𝗔 𝗦𝗵𝗶𝗳𝘁 𝗶𝗻 𝗣𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗲 𝗔𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘀. The surge in lateral moves reflects the demand for expertise in high-growth areas i.e. tech & AI, ESG, secondaries & transactional funds, etc. Firms need to adapt to their clients’ needs and market demands by bringing in specialists who can navigate complex regulatory landscapes and drive innovation. • 𝗖𝘂𝗹𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗮𝗹 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻. The influx of new hires is encouraging firms to reassess their cultural dynamics. Diversity isn’t just a buzzword, and it encompasses so much more than race and gender. Truly diverse talent brings fresh perspectives and challenges, and pushes a firm to foster an inclusive environment that accommodates different working styles. 𝗞𝗲𝘆 𝗜𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 • 𝗢𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗚𝗿𝗼𝘄𝘁𝗵. For lawyers that are looking to make a move, there is an increasing number of opportunities to explore roles that genuinely align with your career aspirations. The demand for niche expertise means that you can leverage your skills and interests in areas such as technology, the environment, financial services, etc. • 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗜𝗺𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗔𝗱𝗮𝗽𝘁𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆. It’s no longer enough to just slot into a team. To stay ahead it’s vital to learn and embrace new technologies, stay abreast of market trends, and hone your leadership skills in order to thrive in such a competitive market. • 𝗡𝗮𝘃𝗶𝗴𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮 𝗗𝘆𝗻𝗮𝗺𝗶𝗰 𝗟𝗮𝗻𝗱𝘀𝗰𝗮𝗽𝗲. Career development is more than just sticking it out and aiming for Senior Associate, Counsel, etc. You need to be thinking about networking, continuous learning, and building a personal brand to best place yourself in a position of power. What are your thoughts on this trend? How do you see it impacting the future of legal practice in London? Let's discuss! ⚖️💼 #londonlegalmarket #legalcareers

CORPORATE LAWYERS | MULTIPLE ROLES | MELBOURNE – While it’s fair to say the transactional legal recruitment market in Australia hasn’t been its usual self this year, there are some stand-out opportunities currently in Melbourne that might be worth considering. Here’s a snapshot of what’s on our books right now: M&A (7 to 12 yrs PQE) leading national mid-tier law firm with excellent partnership prospects Corporate with energy and resources sector focus (4 to 6 yrs PQE) major global law firm Corporate and commercial (2 to 5 yrs PQE) specialist boutique ECM (5 to 12 yrs PQE) short track to partnership for the right person, employer of choice mid-tier Partner Role (flexible about practice size, more about the person and fit) respected national mid-tier M&A (senior associate role 5 to 10 yrs PQE) top 10 law firm While many will wait to see what’s in store at this year’s pay review, largely it’s expected that those firms who are not currently hiring won’t be dishing out much. If you want to progress your career prospects in terms of promotion and remuneration, then perhaps some of these options might represent a career path rather than a holding pattern.
