Business requires teamwork. And teamwork requires communication. If you want to be the best, you need to communicate well. Adopt these 12 key behaviors to improve your communication skills and level up your career: 1/ Be clear and concise ↳ Don’t say: "I would greatly appreciate it if you could provide me with the updated sales figures at your earliest convenience" ↳ Say: "Please send the updated sales figures by the end of the day.” 2/ Prepare Your Thoughts in Advance ↳ Before a meeting, review the agenda and anticipate potential questions. ↳ Prepare clear, concise talking points. 3/ Remember Nonverbal Cues ↳ Maintain eye contact, have an open body posture, and emphasize your points with hand gestures rather than crossing your arms. 4/ Practice Active Listening ↳ When a colleague explains a new project, repeat the key details to show you understand. ↳ Ask clarifying questions rather than immediately responding. 5/ Create Communication Guidelines ↳ Establish team guidelines (e.g. responding to emails within 24 hours). ↳ Use a consistent meeting agenda format. 6/ Choose the Right Communication Channel ↳ For a sensitive personnel issue, have an in-person conversation. Don't discuss over email or chat. 7/ Ask Open-Ended Questions ↳ Use What, How and Why questions. Instead of asking "Did the marketing campaign meet its goals?" try "What were the key goals of the marketing campaign?” 8/ Stop the Texting Style ↳ For important emails, review for clarity, tone, and grammar before hitting send, rather than quickly typing out a brief message. 9/ Open Door Policy ↳ Encourage an "open door" policy where employees feel comfortable sharing ideas and concerns 10/ Resolve Conflict ↳ Don’t leave issues unaddressed. That creates problems later. 11/ Get a Coach ↳ Take public speaking workshops or get a coach. 12/ Overcommunicate ↳ You will never get penalized for giving regular updates!
