The OCCAR (Organisation for Joint Armament Co-operation) has initiated the certification process for the Eurodrone's engine, marking a significant step towards enhancing Europe's strategic autonomy in defence technology. In a recent meeting, OCCAR's Medium Altitude Long Endurance (MALE) Remotely Piloted Aircraft System (RPAS) Programme Division convened with the EASA - European Union Aviation Safety Agency to outline the activities required for certifying the Eurodrone's Catalyst engine, produced by Avio Aero. This engine, notable for being completely ITAR free and manufactured within Europe, is set to achieve full civilian certification by EASA. The Eurodrone project, managed under the guidance of OCCAR and supported by Germany, France, Spain, and Italy, aims to develop a European MALE RPAS, also known as the Eurodrone. This initiative seeks to reduce Europe’s reliance on non-EU manufacturers for Intelligence, Surveillance, Target Acquisition, and Reconnaissance (ISTAR) capabilities, thereby strengthening European strategic sovereignty. The Eurodrone is set to become a cornerstone of the Future Combat Air System (FCAS), enhancing collaborative combat capabilities and securing Europe’s position in advanced military technologies. Across our industry there has been a lot of news this week, almost entirely emanating from Heli-Expo in Anaheim. But what WASN'T said? Airbus had no press releases on the H175, Bell had nothing to say on the 525 and Leonardo were silent on civil market progress of the AW609 - so here's our update on these three programs Airbus Helicopters could have provided an update on their FIPS (Full Icing Protection System) program with two H175s test flying - one out of Trondheim in northern Norway and the second in Canada (pictured here). This approval is key to the British NMH (New Military Helicopter) requirement as well as OGP work to Norwegian rigs. Promoting the latter on Heli-Expo opening day would have been a coup ahead of the sad Bristow SAR S92 accident. Now it's too late, as Airbus can't be seen as potentially capitalising on the unfortunate situation. Bell Flight's 525 program continues to drag on, with certification heavily dependent on the FBW (fly-by-wire) systems. Once the FAA and other authorities finally approve the 525, the OEM will have an uphill struggle for sales in the super-medium market where the H175 and Leonardo's AW189 are already being successful. We can recall their last foray into offshore-sized helicopters with the 214ST, with only 100 built including 45 for the Iraqi military. Leonardo Helicopters are working with Italian military to look at potential missions for the AW609, but pushing this narrative brings with it questions on civil program timelines. The FAA certification basis has been published, but the history dates back 28 years with Bell and Boeing partnering for a civil tiltrotor in 1996, Boeing pulling out in early 1998, followed by Leonardo (then as AW) joining in late 1998. Leonardo bought Bell's share in 2009. We wish all these programs well, and trust each OEM has some positive news soon. We need a healthy helicopter industry. #Helicopter #MarketIntelligence

Janes: https://lnkd.in/g3N8rPVC Business aviation held the annual #EBACE gathering in Geneva, with key themes being "innovation, sustainability, and safety." Exhibitor numbers were down, with the cost of Switzerland proving challenging (Bombardier and Gulfstream Aerospace were absent), as well as the optics of private aviation and environmental concerns. Despite this, traditional OEMs provided industry updates, and advanced air mobility was also on show. Aviation Week Network: https://lnkd.in/gQCMbRtB Airbus' innovation accelerator, Airbus UpNext, showcased their automated taxi research project, Optimate, at #VivaTech. Communicated as a pilot support and operational safety tool, the company's objective is to bring the concept of airborne autopilot to ground ops. However, any new technology and automation should bring a superior level of safety before it is used operationally. Aviation Week Network: https://lnkd.in/gxpY5jjh A survey by the Flight Simulation Association found that student pilots who use home flight simulators like X-Plane or Microsoft Flight Simulator managed to achieve certification with "5.5 fewer flight training hours than those who don't (use simulation), and in almost 20 hours less than the Federal Aviation Administration average." Obviously, there are qualifiers to these survey results, but they highlight the tangible value of complementary simulation as a learning tool.
