What is driving the cost of medicines up in the United States? 🤔 A recent NY Times-Breaking News article explores how pharmacy benefit managers (PBMs) impact drug pricing. Pharmacy is a mess, and the White House knows it. Check out their roundtable summarizing the big issues in pharmacy. --- Monday, the White House hosted a roundtable on lowering #HealthcareCosts and bringing #transparency to prescription drug middlemen. It's an hour long on Youtube (link in the comments) OR 30 minutes if you go with 2x speed 😉 --- The information shared likely isn't new or surprising to anyone here, but it's a great summary of the problems in #pharmacy right now. Some of the topics discussed: - Anticompetitive practices by PBMs - Pharmacy reimbursement - Restriction of access to prescriptions - Transparent pricing - #DrugShortages - Generic drug manufacturing --- The panel was full of very knowledgeable people in the drug supply chain. It's worth the time to review the video and/or send to those who don't understand why pharmacy is having so many problems. HHS Secretary Xavier Becerra Lina Khan Andy Beshear for Governor Dared Price Chichi Ilonzo Momah, PharmD Mark Cuban Alex Oshmyansky, MD, PhD Sandra Clark, MPH

Medicare drug pricing negotiations kicked off earlier this month, and it's one for pharmacies & consumers to watch. For the first time, the federal government is proposing tying a medication's price to effectiveness compared to similar treatments. The move brings the U.S. in line with other similar countries that already make these kinds of value assessments when pricing drugs. "The fact that America is in a sense joining the rest of the developed world in realizing they can't assume the market will fix everything with value, price, and access — that's a big deal," said Steve Pearson, founder of the Institute for Clinical and Economic Review (ICER), an independent organization that assesses the value of medical treatments. #Pharmacy #DrugPricing #Healthcare #FutureofHealthcare
