In 1982, Prime Minister Menachem Begin said to Senator Joe Biden: “Don’t threaten us with cutting off aid to give up our principles. I’m not a Jew with trembling knees. I am a proud Jew with 3,700 years of civilized history. Nobody came to our aid when we were dying in the gas chambers and ovens. Nobody came to our aid when we were striving to create our country. We paid for it. We fought for it. We died for it. We will stand by our principles. We will defend them. And, when necessary, we will die for them again, with or without your aid.” “Standing by our principles” is crucial to withstanding global pressures. "Our principles" refer to the foundational ideals that now underpin civilized society. On a national level, these ideals include liberty and justice for all, inalienable rights, supporting the less fortunate, and global unity as a value. On a personal level, these ideals include the values we aspire for our children so they can live full and productive lives. All of these ideals require harnessing our instinctual behaviors. Doing so embodies an acknowledgment of another’s existence and rights. Additionally, embracing life’s ideals reflects a conscious or implicitly held belief in a higher authority. The intuitively sound and universally resonant nature of life's ideals points to a higher authority as their origin. In contrast, a perverted belief in God facilitates the unleashing of the darkest aspects of human existence in the negation of others. Jewish thought teaches that the long-term solution to the Jewish people's challenges is to more wholly and actively embrace the life ideals that embody God’s ennobling agenda for humanity.

Very much appreciate this public comment about a man whose impact has yet to be fully appreciated. I tend to steer clear of *party political* comment (as distinct from *political* comment, which is inescapable when it comes to matters of inclusion and social justice). But Ray Lewis is an exception. Part of what made him unique was the way in which he was able to navigate and defy 'conventional' political expectations. People know about his connection with Boris Johnson. What is less appreciated is that over EYLA's lifetime, three people who have held ministerial offices in Conservative governments have sat on EYLA's board. Through them he became known and respected by the Conservative 'establishment' both in City Hall and to a more limited extent in Whitehall. My observation (from a distance) was that it was his authenticity as much as anything that helped him build that connection. It wasn't about hiding who he was, and what he and EYLA stood for. If anything, the strength of his conviction is what made him more attractive. There is a message there for us all. I think this was also true in the segments of the wider business community which might be seen as 'small c' Conservative who came to support EYLA. In Ray they saw someone with a compelling story to tell, who also delivered results in a way that few others were able to do, over a consistent period of time. Contrast that with the the support that that came from those on the political spectrum who are ordinarily presumed to be the flag-bearers for racial equity. Not absent (big respect to Lee Jasper in particular), but certainly less visible. A curious thing. Your friends don't always come from the places you expect. Again, there is a message there for us all.
Very sad news today that Ray Lewis, an old friend, key colleague at City Hall and very special man has died. Sought to capture his contribution and address his critics in today’s Evening Standard
