At Johnson & Johnson, we acknowledge this National Reconciliation Week and the 2024 theme, Now More Than Ever, as an important time for all Australians to reflect on the role each of us play in reconciliation, and take time to learn about First Nations history, culture and their continuing connection to the land, sea and waterways. As a healthcare company, we understand the role we can play in creating improved health outcomes for First Nations people – one of the priorities of Closing the Gap. That’s why we have revised our Health Equity strategy to refocus on supporting access to healthcare, providing educational opportunities for First Nations healthworkers, nurses and doctors, and to continue educating our employees on allyship, racism and unconscious bias. Now More Than Ever, we are committed to tackling the unfinished business of Reconciliation. #reconciliation #nrw #reconciliationaustralia #firstnations #healthequity #closingthegap

The MCC team celebrates and supports the goal of National Reconciliation Week - the goal of a just, equitable, and reconciled Australia. 'Now more than ever,' we must acknowledge and address the disparities faced by Indigenous communities, particularly in the context of health and medical research. Indigenous Australians have unique cultural perspectives and experiences crucial to understanding health and wellness. However, their voices are often underrepresented in medical research. We commit to focusing on inclusion, understanding, and learning in the work we do. #NRW2024 #Reconciliation #IndigenousHealth

Australia prides itself on being a fair and equal society—but are we really there yet? Inequity still affects countless Australians, woven into the structures that shape our daily lives. We all feel its impact, whether directly or indirectly. But together, we can change this. Equity is increasingly recognised as a critical goal for public policy and economic development. Australia has made strides through progressive taxation, wages policy, and universal access to healthcare and education. Yet, despite these efforts, inequality continues to widen. How is this possible? The question we need to ask is not only whether we value equity but whether we fully understand what achieving it requires. Are we exploring the right solutions? What will it take to reverse the current trend? What are the barriers or challenges to achieving the system-wide reforms needed to ensure Australia’s equity goals can be achieved, where everyone has the chance to thrive? What can you do? Join the conversation at the Advancing Equity Summit this October 17 & 18 on Kabi Kabi country, Noosa, Queensland. Let’s unpack the data and dig into the wicked problems. You’ll learn from case studies that give us hope—and explore how YOU can be part of the transformative change needed for a fairer future. We’re thrilled to have Dr Norman Swan, renowned health broadcaster, as our Summit MC, and international social equity innovator and CEO of PolicyLink Dr. Michael McAfee for this 2-day transformative event. Diversity of thought, experience and expertise is critical to ensuring good governance and effective decision-making. Our latest report, Action For Equality in Wales and Northern Ireland: The time is now set out to establish benchmark data for diversity across health and care services in Wales and Northern Ireland. The report found that although some progress had been made, it was important to ensure this diversity and inclusion was fully embedded. Our statement on January 26. ... HealthWISE acknowledges the various responses the events of January 26 raise in our communities. Some Australians consider today a day of celebration and national pride, but for many Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, January 26 is a day both of mourning and of celebration of surviving past and ongoing injustices. HealthWISE staff live and work in communities across northern New South Wales and southern Queensland. 25% of staff identify as Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander. Our First Nations Australians are proud to be recognised as the world's longest continuing culture and work every day to deliver programs and services to improve the health of our whole community. Although the 2023 referendum to adopt a Voice to parliament was not successful, organisations across the country, including HealthWISE, will continue to listen to First Nations communities to put measures in place to ensure that future generations of First Nations people live in equity and that as a nation we close the targeted gaps. It is essential to listen, respect and learn from the diverse peoples and cultures of the First Nations that make up modern Australia and recognise and value the strengths within our communities while acknowledging ongoing challenges that hurt and disadvantage First Nations peoples. Today may provide an opportunity for you to learn more about First Nations culture - a small act to contribute to a healthier community and better understanding between our cultures. https://lnkd.in/fRGry5x

Wes Streeting MP, Secretary of State for Health and Social Care, gave an inspiring talk today at a Future of Britain event. Key points from watching online: - The Department of Health and Social Care is now an "economic growth department" - improving health outcomes will boost productivity and prosperity. - Wes Streeting emphasised ending the "begging bowl culture" where DHSC's primary interaction with HM Treasury is asking for more money. Instead, he envisions a partnership where DHSC helps achieve the government's growth mission. - He highlighted his responsibility for "one of the largest workforces in the entire world," seeing the NHS and social care system as anchor institutions capable of driving economic growth across the country. - NHS reform is essential to address immediate challenges and long-term sustainability. - Focus on shifting care into communities, preventing illness, and embracing health tech innovation. - Emphasis on marrying the health and social care system with the UK's life sciences and medtech ecosystem. - A long-term plan for both health and social care is in the works, recognising their interconnected nature. - Commitment to keeping the NHS free at the point of use, emphasising fairness and equity. - Addressing the junior doctors' dispute: meeting with them today, maintaining that the 35% pay demand is unaffordable, but showing respect through honesty. Wants to address junior doctors' concerns beyond pay, including workplace flexibility. - Streeting acknowledged the challenges faced by his department, noting the instability caused by frequent leadership changes. He praised the DHSC team for guiding the country through the pandemic despite lacking direction and leadership. He sees an opportunity to recognise these challenges and inspire the department with a long-term vision. - Streeting emphasised Labour's deep connection to the NHS while acknowledging the need for "tough love" to drive necessary changes. - He expressed confidence that with support from the workforce and DHSC, the NHS and social care can be reformed and strengthened for the 21st century. I'm enjoying working my way through this new Centre for Policy Development report on 'Australian attitudes to democratic purpose, priorities and performance'. Its commentary is nuanced: sometimes worrying, sometimes heartening, sometimes both. Its tone is measured - at times, almost gentle. So far (I'm still reading), I have particularly appreciated Katherine Trebeck's examination of 'wellbeing', a term widely-used and conveniently open to multiple definitions: 'Thus, as with most polling, the reported percentages elicit a desire to sit down with some of those polled and, over a cup of tea, discuss where their answers come from. What, for example, did respondents think when they heard the word “wellbeing”? A narrow and fleeting idea akin to hedonism? A bland, corporate wellness program? Or a multidimensional, collective quality-of-life understanding?' #wellbeing #greyliterature #Australiandemocracy #recommendingthefuture
