Charitable organisations play a crucial role in society, and I've had the privilege of closely collaborating with several of them to provide operational support. Despite their charitable nature, these organisations operate similarly to businesses. Here are some key business-like aspects of charities: - Operational Management: Charities need efficient management of operations, including budgeting, staffing, and resource allocation, like businesses. - Strategic Planning: Like businesses, charities develop strategic plans encompassing marketing, fundraising, and impact measurement to achieve their objectives. - Accountability and Reporting: Maintaining transparency and accountability to donors and regulatory bodies is vital for charities, mirroring how businesses report to shareholders and regulators. Having first hand experience with the challenges charitable organisations, I've highlighted some of them in a recent presentation. Why aren't nonprofits reaching out to businesses for sponsorships? According to the Charities Aid Foundation, 69% of the public believe businesses have an obligation to support the communities in which they operate or make money. Interestingly, every business owner or executive I have met and discussed this topic with believes it is only suitable for businesses to give back to communities they make money from. So, where's the disconnect? Why are nonprofits still struggling to get funding when the profit margin of businesses has skyrocketed over the years? I think non-profit leaders aren't asking enough. And those that are asking aren't asking the right way. These limitations have led to many nonprofits leaving so much money and funding on the table over the years. But this must change. And that change can start with you. You must stand up and speak up for your organization, and you must learn to do so consistently. You may not understand the process; there's always room for learning and improvement.
