I will be following the announcements with interest. Pleased that the new government seems to be taking this issue seriously and treating it as a priority. I will be interested to see if they will be looking at recall rates and their impact on the prison population. In our work we are seeing recalls like never before, sometimes within days of a person's release, and very rarely as a result of the person committing another offence. Really grateful for all they are doing to elevate the voices of young women and girls affected by the criminal justice system and highlighting the need for specialist services such as ours at ID Essence (www.idessence.org).
New analysis, released today in our briefing paper with Alliance for Youth Justice (AYJ) reveals unacceptable levels of self-harm among young women in prison: 🔴 In 2022, the number of self-harm incidents in custody amongst 21 to 24-year-old women surpassed all other female age groups 🔴 Over the previous four years, self-harm among this group of young women has been consistently rising. 🔴 In 2022, 138 young women aged 21 to 24 self-harmed while in prison. On average, these young women self-harmed 34 times during the year. We know that most young women in contact with the justice system have histories of violence; abuse and exploitation; poor mental health; substance misuse; poverty or have no safe place to call home. Making up just 9% of all women in prison, young women are systematically overlooked in policy and practice, meaning early opportunities to prevent a cycle of harm and divert young women from criminalisation are being missed. This briefing provides specific and tangible ways young adult women (17-25) in contact with the criminal justice system could be better supported. Imago Dei’s ID Essence team provide pastoral and practical support to young women aged 18-25 in prison and after prison. The needs of women in this age bracket in the criminal justice system are often complex and multi-layered. However, there is a real lack of age and gender-specific support in place for this age group to meet these needs. Agenda Alliance published a literature review to highlight the experiences of young adult women in contact with the Criminal Justice System. Describing 17-25 year-olds as a “minority within a minority”, the review states how “little is understood about their experiences”.
