Do you want to know the best way to ask your person with dementia questions so that they can communicate with you? Hi, I'm Joanne. I'm a dementia expert and I make videos like this every day, so don't forget to follow me. Have you ever had a challenging time communicating with your person with dementia? I know sometimes it can be difficult and it can kind of feel like A1 sided conversation. Kind of like if you call someone on the phone and they're not good at talking on the phone and they're just saying when you ask a question, they're like, Yep, good. Fine. And you're like, whoa, this is a difficult conversation. Well, The thing is, people with dementia struggle with coming up with answers to your questions. It takes them longer to first of all think through what you're saying and then longer to communicate. And so instead of asking an open-ended question with multiple answers, you want to ask a closed ended question with two choices. So I'll give you an example. Instead of asking someone what's your favorite food, you wanna ask them, well, do you prefer pasta or do you like steak and potatoes? And if that is too challenging for them, then you can ask it in a yes or no question by saying, do you like pasta? Yes, Sir. And they can say yes or no. So that's a great tip when you're communicating with your person with dementia is give them two choices. And the good thing about dementia care in this way, shape and form is if you're talking to your person and they're looking at you like I have no idea what you just said or with a blank stare, you know, you said the question wrong, so you can change it from an open-ended question to a closed ended. Question. And then you get another chance to get them to communicate with you. That way you can both feel great about the way that you guys are connecting and you can still learn things about your person with dementia. Hope that helps.
