The problem is that the establishment will not come for one of its own. There's a mutual conspiracy of tolerance between them. In part, this is understandable. The chance you've stepped on someone's toes or behaved in a less than strictly legal manner is far greater for politicians and the wealthy, good and bad Their activities cover vastly larger areas of society than most of us: you and me. If Vennells is held criminally responsible for the disaster that is the Post Office, it will set a precedent for criminal action against other members of the establishment. None of them want to face the justice that goes with the dictum: authority should be accompanied by responsibility The desire for unaccountable power is behind the failure to make her face justice. It is an ugly reality that none of us would welcome a world where every infringement or misdemeanour would result in action against us. Vennells is all but bulletproof. Failure to hold her responsible is signal of a justice system paralysed by fear of retribution from politicians and the rich It will take something close to a political earthquake to ensure Vennells stands in the dock. When law enforcement is optional, a justice system is in contempt of the law and itself. In many cases, poorly drafted or contradictory legislation leads to the law being in contempt of itself. It is not the fault of law or justice but manifestation of the contempt or simple incompetence of legislators Civilisations decline and fall when those with vested or usurped authority are not held responsible. They fail as law increasingly becomes little more than the voice of hopeful expectation and good intentions to be repeatedly crushed by politicians and the wealthy off the leash The British legal system is increasingly in contempt of itself, justice and the Law. The police have yet to take a serious step to prosecute any Post Office staff, hiding behind the excuse that 'an enquiry is on-going'. They know doing so would have major political consequences and, naturally, hold back. There is no rationality to blame If they prosecute for, say, Corporate Manslaughter, the weight of anger from those used to being above the law would ensure whoever took that decision would be treated in the way Vennells deserves. Justice has to be tempered by prudence. Because law cannot be perfect, change happens and legislators make mistakes; flexibility, nuance and humanity demand that it is not absolute. In most cases, sentencing is not dictated in the UK and the US and juries are capable of 'perverse decisions', which can save law and justice making f**ls of themselves Perhaps the right decision on Vennells is to suggest going to live abroad might be the most politic move. I suspect this method has been used many times in my lifetime. It's far from ideal, but until we sort out the philosophical foundations of our society and political system, it appears to be the only passingly just arrangement
