Great example of why OSHA Subpart P requires engineering in some way, shape or form on protective systems. I always ask my class attendees, “when do we need engineering?” It’s a loaded question because there’s several options for designing systems. The answer I always seem to get is, “At 20’ deep”. This is Really a misinterpretation in many ways. Any protective system for excavations is engineered to withstand soil collapse, based on the depth and the soil type. Clearly in this example, this two sided shield is not. So depth from grade is fairly simple, but if you work in dirt, how do you assess soil type? Do you do a manual test? Are you recording it in your JHA or similar? Are you able to tell your cage supplier, what type it is? Finally, water logged soils are the heaviest and exert the most pressure. Be very careful when working in this type of soil.

BIG protection from cold! As the seasons begin to change, communities across North America are preparing their infrastructure. Harsh winter weather conditions are a part of life in mountainous South Adams County, Colorado, and they had taken their toll on 163 manholes showing signs of deterioration. To address the loss of structural integrity, the manholes were lined with Quadex® QM-1s Restore®, a cementitious mortar known for its structural restoration properties. The engineer called for Quadex Structure Guard®, a 100% solids epoxy spray, to add the needed corrosion protection. Although the frigid Colorado temperatures presented many challenges, the crews were able to successfully complete this manhole rehabilitation project.
