Yesterday, Anshuman shared his battle with self-doubt during our chat: - "Everyone else seems to have a perfect study plan." - "They all ace practice tests on their first try." - "Why can't my journey be as straightforward?" Acknowledging his efforts seemed impossible amidst his frustration. So, what was the root of this turmoil? I introduced him to the concept of the narrative fallacy: - "Follow these three steps to break 700." - "Just study 'X' hours a day, and you're golden." - "I balanced work, life, and the GMAT seamlessly." Some stories are embellished, some aren't, but every story is more complex than it appears. We're comparing our raw, unedited footage to their highlight reels. Feeling like you're the only one struggling to connect the dots? Shift your perspective. Your journey is uniquely yours, not a carbon copy of someone else's success story. Within various social media posts on LinkedIn, Reddit, or Medium, the debate often manifests as a semantic argument that seems petty and inconsequential to most outside observers. You can’t really blame anyone for thinking of these debates as unproductive nonsense akin to the infamous—and never-ending—“tabs vs. spaces” flame war. Toolkit Tuesday: Being Offended When others are careless or callous with us, one of our go-to moves is to be offended. “How dare they?!” “They clearly don’t respect me!” “I can’t believe they talked to me that way!” What if we resisted that impulse? What if we simply noticed their actions and asked ourselves, “do I believe myself to be deserving of their treatment, comment, judgment, or disregard?” If “no,” what if we realized that their behavior (that we’ve concluded isn’t really about us) is just that: THEIR behavior? In doing so, we could save ourselves a lot of heartache and direct our focus toward addressing their behavior without complicating it with the drama that spins from being offended.
