Tips to support people with learning disability at work: ☑ Develop a glossary of technical terms and acronyms used in the workplace ☑ Include visual elements, such as pictures and diagrams, along with written information ☑ Provide important information, such as procedure manuals, in both written and audio formats ☑ Use alternative communication styles. Do you notice an employee struggling to process written instructions or taking extra time to complete tasks? Perhaps they excel in discussions but find it difficult to organize thoughts on paper. These are just a few signs that may indicate a learning disability. Other indicators are included in the guide below 👇 How can workplaces offer support? - Implement tools that can assist with written tasks, like speech-to-text software or visual aids. - Break tasks into smaller, manageable steps and allow extra time when needed. - Create an environment where employees feel safe discussing their challenges. Inclusion means adapting to the needs of all individuals and giving them equal opportunities to thrive. #WorkplaceInclusion #LearningDisabilities #DiversityInTheWorkplace

The concept of reasonable adjustments in the workplace can be difficult to understand. The reasonable is not definitive and there are potentially times that when adjustments are put in place the person can still not carry out the work. I am also concerned that some managers do not understand that reasonable adjustments mean adjusting the workplace - for example fatigue management due to a diagnosed condition does not mean taking holidays but building breaks into the work schedule. Recently I was impressed to see a form titled 'functional requirements'. It defined three areas: ✅ the requirement /health condition ✅ conditions/work task impacted ✅ adjustments/support One of the examples explained the requirements for hearing and vision. The requirements included for example: 📖 reading and writing electronic information, ⏰ ability to react to alarms, 🔸 🔹 and colour coding systems. From this, the form defines how for example colour blindness, dyslexia etc could impact the ability to carry out the role. The final column includes the reasonable adjustments 👂 hearing loops, ☎ adapted telephones, 👨👩👧👦 staff training, 📄 and that a report on the person's dyslexia that identifies the suitable adjustments to be put in place to protect the person, co-workers and service users. Do we all need to be more aware and understand reasonable adjustments more inclusively? However, what are the limits of reasonable adjustments? That part challenges me because I want everyone to be able to do everything and have that I can attitude! 🤔 #reasonableadjustments #disabilityrights #inclusivityatwork #workplaceadjustments #disability #occupationaltherapy #learning #accesstowork
