Challenges in Recruiting As seen in Hunt Scanlon Media's recently released Higher Education Executive Recruiting Newsletter, the difficulty of #recruiting senior executives for #colleges and universities is directly proportional to the challenges faced by the higher education sector. According to Shawn Hartman, Ed.D., SVP and COO of Academic Search, “Both public and private institutions contend with increasingly more complex environments due to governmental policies such as student aid and free speech, a lack of general trust in higher #education from the public, and technological advancements that may affect both teaching and working environments.” To read more, and download the full newsletter, please visit: https://lnkd.in/eck_TgF

Exciting developments in Philadelphia as newly inaugurated Mayor Cherelle L. Parker signed an executive order removing college degree requirements for specific city jobs. This bold move, part of her 100-Day Action Plan, is all about opening doors for more Philadelphians to access good-paying jobs. With only about a third of Philly residents holding a bachelor's degree, it's a crucial step toward tearing down the "paper ceiling." Nationwide, more than 70 million workers don’t have a college degree, per research from Opportunity@Work. That means half of the U.S. workforce faces barriers to employment from simply not holding a college degree. This move is not just a policy change; it's a testament to the growing skills-based hiring movement. I strongly believe in the power of postsecondary education and lifelong learning, and Mayor Parker's bold stance reinforces the reality that learning happens in various ways and that learned skills matter—creating opportunities for success, no matter your educational background. I hope others will follow her lead. I'm just gonna leave this right here. It's not that degrees are obsolete, but if you insist on a degree, or like a character on "Suits" believe that a degree from an elite school makes you more qualified, please remember the following: 👉 The increased cost of education makes it unattainable for many Americans. Nationwide, the 2023 average cost of in-state universities is close to $12,000 annually. Private universities cost over $27,000 👉 About 40% of admission spots for Ivy League universities are reserved for legacy candidates 👉 Wealthy candidates are twice as likely to be admitted to elite schools. In fact, 1 out of 6 students at an Ivy League school has a parent in the top 1% That's why it's so exciting to see Governor Healey enact this executive order. We don't all win the birth lottery, but we all deserve the same opportunities. #skillsbasedhiring

As the enrollment cliff continues to make its way across higher ed, it has become more crucial than ever to create and follow strategic plans to recruit a new cohort for each semester or term. How can a recruitment team get this done? Consider the concept of buckets. Each segmented audience represents buckets. Each bucket has assigned team players to bring in the segmented audience. What does this look like? High school seniors are a bucket. Team members working together for this bucket can include recruiters, financial assistance counselor, an application processor, and a member from the MarComm team. This team meets regularly and follows a plan designed to bring in new freshmen. Adult learners are a bucket. Team members may be the same as above with additional subject matter experts such as, an advisor or someone from the registrar's office who can articulate transfer transcripts. Like high school seniors, this team meets regularly to review and improve the recruitment and marketing tactics. Does your marketing and recruitment strategy have buckets? 🐸 Are the right team members involved with a laser focus of bringing in the identified segment? 🔦 Want more great stuff like this? Colleges and Universities Rely on Search Firms to Find Leaders in Polarizing Times As seen in Hunt Scanlon Media's recently released Higher Education Executive Recruiting Newsletter, #academic institutions continue to pump big fees into executive search firms nationwide. Many academic #recruiting specialists say business, in fact, has never been better despite some sectors of executive search slowing over the past year. The activity for recruiting senior level college and university executives is at a high level, according to William Funk, founder and president of R. William Funk & Associates. “Currently, among others, there are president/chancellor searches in various stages at Harvard, Yale, Penn, UNC Chapel Hill, New Mexico State, UCLA, West Virginia, et al. Stanford, Berkeley, Colorado-Boulder, Minnesota, Nebraska, and Temple have just recently concluded searches or have narrowed their choice to one finalist,” he said. “Similarly, there is significant movement at the provost, VP, and dean levels.” To read more, and download the full newsletter, please visit: https://lnkd.in/eck_TgF
