⭕️💙CREATING A CIRCLE OF FRIENDS Circle of Friends is an approach to enhancing the inclusion, in a mainstream setting, of any child or young person who is experiencing difficulties in school because of disability, personal crisis or because of their challenging behaviour towards others. The ‘circle of friends’ approach works by mobilising the young person’s peers to provide support and engage in problem solving with the person in difficulty. ‘Circle of friends’ is not the same as ‘circle time’ but many of the skills and techniques used by teachers in ‘circle time’ can be used to support the ‘circle of friends’ process. Over the past 12 years my self ,Colin Newton and Derek Wilson have been encouraging the use of ‘circle of friends’ in a wide variety of primary and secondary schools, often with very successful outcomes. Some of these are described in their books ‘Circles of Friends’, (Folens, 1999) and ‘Creating Circles of Friends’ (Inclusive Solutions, 2005). This is an excellent opportunity to learn from Colin Newton and Derek Wilson the educational psychologists who brought this Department of Education endorsed approach to the UK. It’s College Major Monday, so let’s talk about Disability Studies! 🙋 Disability Studies equips students to help those with disabilities. They learn how to create and advocate for policies in government, corporations, and nonprofit organizations with the goal of increasing inclusivity and creating a greater sense of community. Birkman areas of interest ➡️ Individuals who have a lot of Birkman GREEN (people, communication, relationships) with high motivation in Social Service will thrive in this career. What school has a good program? ➡️ Not many schools offer this degree. The University of Toledo was the first in the nation, and UCLA is the most recent school to offer the program. What are some potential careers? ➡️ Social work, HR, advocacy, camp or recreation director, policy creation, teacher. Eight years ago today, 49 souls were taken away at the Pulse Nightclub shooting in Orlando, most Queer Latin* folks just trying to live their truth with love. Living in Florida at the time, the shooting affected me, being a person who visited Pulse. From that pain to the Queer community and reflecting on those lives lost, it became the catalyst for my dissertation focusing on Queer Latin* college students, in essence shifting my work in Higher Education as a scholar-practitioner. Today, Rutgers University /Rutgers University - Newark released its interview on my Diamond honoree award I received in March, celebrating my close to 15-year career and my Queer Latinx joy in higher education. Like I said in the interview: “Being Latinx, queer, and dealing with mental health challenges, it was important for me to give back in a very specific way in higher ed and ensure that kids like me not only see themselves in the world but that they feel more than worthy to be in it.” On this particular day, with Pulse on my mind, finding purpose in life is critical. I thank the universe and Santa Barbara for giving me a daily purpose to educate and motivate my students, especially with love. Remember always: Love is Love & as humans, we are #OnePulse. Does the School Offer Opportunities or Buckets? There's a child I know who doesn't speak much. I've known her for three years now. But this year in front of 200 parents she went on the stage in the annual school function and compered. This opportunity has been offered to her every year over the last three years. Something she refused. But this year it happened. This is something I've seen missing in most schools. In classes, children get bucketed and labeled very early: * She's good in sports, she's not good in math; * she's good in art, she's not good in dance. Then children are placed in specific streams and not offered other opportunities. The school this girl went to doesn't try to look at young kids as labels. Every year, opportunities are offered to every child, regardless of their past or history. I hope every child can attend a school like this. Someone this seems to be a hard thing to do for most schools. I believe this is an easy thing to do if parents/teachers/ understand that children are growing and changing every day. This article addresses an important topic especially when looking at the accessibility of career education for all students, not just a privileged few. Our students are impacted by their unique socio-economic and cultural lenses. Some have mental health challenges or diverse learning needs. Families from war torn countries are moving to Canada with language barriers and deep trauma. With the right support, people with intellectual and developmental disabilities can achieve dreams of independence. For many, however, society's limiting beliefs stand in their way. Taya felt alone and misunderstood in school. School staff discouraged her dreams and undermined her confidence. When we met her, she was underemployed but convinced she could do so much more. Inclusion BC found scholarship funding and helped her apply for a post-secondary program to become a certified Education Assistant. Now, Taya’s excited to help another generation of students reach their goals.
