A professional on this platform recently shared some challenges she’s faced in her job search due to her disability. A lot of the comments she received were disappointing, dismissive and insensitive. I won’t attempt to retell her story because that is not my place, but I will say that we all need to be mindful that others may need different accommodations in the workplace than we do and we should be more open in our thinking when discussing these issues. Seeing that post reminded me of an informative workshop that I had the opportunity to participate in when I worked at the Girl Scouts of the USA. One of the key things shared during the learning session that has stuck with me is the fact that we are all TAPs (temporary able-bodied people). I had never heard the term before, and when it was explained to me, it made a lot of sense. Over the course of your lifetime, or in an instant, your physical abilities or mental capacity can change or be impacted. Looking through this lens with this perspective should challenge us to be more understanding and supportive of others with different accessibility needs. A lot of companies do offer appropriate resources for workers with specialized accommodation needs, but when professionals are faced with situations when they feel these necessities are not being provided or if an inequity in this regard is taking place, then it’s on us to make sure these co-workers, colleagues and job applicants are supported without making them feel at fault for their realities. Build Your Brand With every document and personal interaction involved in the job search, remember that you are building your brand. Perception is important, so take care of your brand. You should have a well-thought-out “information statement.” This will come in handy during an interview when asked “tell me about you.” Think of this as your 30-second professional “elevator speech” – which includes a short feature/benefit statement that will gain the interest of the person listening. It’s taken years even to acknowledge my disability at work, let alone ask for minor adjustments instead trying to make little fuss. The notion that adjustments could and should be fluid makes sense to me, as well as the notion that open and regular communication is needed with your employer to ensure your safety and enable you to be your best self at work. We have been emphasizing this crucial message for years. Many individuals participating in our courses often grapple with learning difficulties, and this challenge extends to undiagnosed older generations as well. It's disheartening that some are unaware of their right to request reasonable adjustments during interviews. Recognizing this possibility can be a pivotal first step in instilling confidence for individuals seeking employment. Sometimes, the ideal candidate for a role refrains from applying due to the overwhelming and inaccessible nature of the application process. Even the language used in job descriptions, such as "must thrive in a noisy, busy environment," can discourage neurodiverse individuals by seemingly excluding the possibility of reasonable adjustments, such as noise-canceling headphones. The initial stride towards improvement lies in raising awareness. This awareness needs to extend to both hirers and employers on fostering inclusivity. Simultaneously, neurodivergent individuals need to be informed about the feasible adjustments available to them, as well as recognizing and embracing the unique skills they bring to the workplace – such as creative thinking, intense focus, attention to detail, honesty, integrity, and exceptional multitasking abilities. While we applaud the BBC for initiating this conversation, our goal is to perpetuate and amplify it, working towards transforming these statistics. Erin's decision to speak out is commendable, but the reasons behind it are concerning. But it does raise the question: do some recruiters and leaders actually ghost or even choose not to hire individuals due to a disability? I would hope not, but could this actually be the case? This👇 Recently someone I know applied for a job and for the first time ever, they were asked to provide a list of workplace adjustments for their neurodiversity. They had never been asked this before nor really provided any adjustments in previous roles. Unfortunately, this person has lost job roles and opportunities due to their neurodiversity (which is problematic in itself). Due to this, they were happy that the company were willing to be accommodating but soon realised that they had no idea what adjustments would work for them nor what support was available (I.e. access to work). Adjustments are never ‘one size fits all’, having a period of time to test different adjustments to see what would benefit yourself should be a standard! Especially if it’s the persons first time being able to fully exercise reasonable adjustments for themselves.
