To Whom It May Regard, I was recently wrongfully terminated for taking my lunch breaks because of my disability under the American Disability Act. WALGREENS DISCRIMINATE if you have a disability. Even if it was approved through Sedgwick, Walgreens does not value ACCOMMODATIONS made by an employee. Walgreens has a culture of undervaluing their employees with disabilities. They’re saying, a person who works 8 hours with a new csa cannot take their lunch break. I was overwhelmed and overworked. I was burnt out. I made multiple requests for time off and they been ignored or given to another individual. They don’t allow an individual to take time off. I had my anniversary to my accident and I wasn’t allowed to take the time off. They don’t allow call offs even if your sick. When you do they treat you as a villain. Kyle, Jasmine, Rori, & myself went to the People w/ Disabilities Awareness Day event where we set up a booth for Not Your Average Joe (NYAJ) Coffee & told people about us. NYAJ advocates for & employs friends w/ intellectual, developmental, &/or mental disabilities. And we’re not new at doing this, we currently employ over 100 people w/ disabilities. We don’t hire them for meaningless jobs that we just made up, either. They create drinks (barista), make food (fresh burritos, sandwiches, etc.), they serve the food, the work in the warehouse pulling orders for our 6 locations, shelve product, bag coffee, etc. And we don’t pay them only a couple dollars, like government work programs, we pay them an ACTUAL wage! Myself, for example, was started out at $10.00/hr; if you know anything about me, I have a Massively Traumatic Brain Injury (MTBI). We don’t just give them orders over & over, we help them grow & develop critical thinking skills; we tell them to do something, & if THEY’RE not doing anything after they finish, we ask them something like “Is there something you could be doing?” or “Does *this* need to be done?” We’re all about helping them grow as people & we WANT them to grow! Schools do little more than babysit them, then don’t help them find a job(s) or anything when they graduate; essentially throwing them to the wolves. Instead of LETTING the wolves have them, we catch them when the school throws them away & we give them a place to start building a future! We hire adults who/ disabilities &, from schools that have work learning programs, we hire students 14 & older. When the students graduate, we just hire them straight up. NYAJ is a wonderful place, w/ even better people! Hey everyone! I’m super excited to announce the launch of our Disability Resource Group (ABLE - Achieving Better Lives for Everyone) at Abercrombie & Fitch! I’m proud to be a co-chair! Being both a caregiver of someone with a disability and having disabilities myself... this launch is personal for me. 🤗 This group is about creating a safe space for people to feel seen and to learn together so we can all feel supported. I firmly believe everyone deserves to feel valued and respected at work, no matter their abilities or disabilities. ABLE is here to break down the stigma and shame associated with disability by raising awareness and providing support. Most importantly… we are going to TALK ABOUT IT. 😍 Here's what we'll be focusing on: Education and Awareness: We'll teach/learn about the different types of disabilities and how we can be inclusive. Support and Advocacy: We'll provide support to employees with disabilities and caregivers of those with disabilities. We listen, we learn, we grow. We're thrilled to start this journey and make Abercrombie & Fitch a more inclusive and authentic workplace for everyone. In the words of Maya Angelou, "Do the best you can until you know better.
