Having worked with the Jobs and Skills Australia team and seen the great work they’re capable of, it’s disappointing that this report hasn’t done more to tackle the long-standing issues in our food supply chain. The Government’s intent was to provide robust workforce data to support policy and business decisions, but unfortunately, this study hasn’t delivered on that promise. Instead, it largely revisits old problems without offering the fresh insights needed to drive meaningful change. While the report makes 41 recommendations, many of these simply reiterate those from the '2020 National Agricultural Workforce Strategy'. The call for a national approach to labour hire licensing, while valid, is something stakeholders have been advocating for years. Similarly, it could have said more about reducing the costs of the Pacific Australia Labour Mobility (PALM) scheme, something critical to ensuring its viability for businesses and maximising its impact in the Pacific region. The recommendation for a targeted, capped visa pathway for short-term workforce needs in horticulture is useful but not groundbreaking. The real challenge now is ensuring the Australian Government follows through on the recommendations that employers support, rather than allowing this report to gather dust alongside others like it.

"The final report presents a series of recommendations addressing the following key themes: - Improve the relevance and delivery of tertiary education and training. - Invest in substantial veterinary and biosecurity workforce pathways. - Combat worker exploitation and ensure migration continues to support regional Australia. - Harness opportunities within the Pacific Australia Labour Mobility (PALM) scheme. - Improve labour hire practices, enforcement and information. - Support apprenticeships and traineeships for critical roles. - Facilitate better planning of the food supply chain workforce. - Address barriers in regional, rural and remote Australia." Very interesting themes that government can help address.
