🌈 According to Diversity Council Australia Ltd’s report Out at Work: From Prejudice to Pride, just 32 per cent of #LGBTQI+ employees surveyed were out to everyone they work with. But 74 per cent of those surveyed said it was important to them to be able to be out at work. The reasons why a person may not be out to their colleagues are often personal, however employers can take steps to create a safe, inclusive culture where LGBTQI+ employees feel more welcomed and able to be themselves at work. According to the report, LGBTQI+ people in inclusive cultures were three times more likely to be out to their colleagues. When a person feels that they have to act differently at work than they do with family and friends, it’s known as code-switching. Code-switching in order to fit in can take an exhausting toll. And it is possible to create a workplace where employees don’t need to code-switch. This Pride Month, we encourage employers to take those steps and make sure their LGBTQI+ employees are enabled and empowered at work. The benefits are numerous; the Out at Work report notes that LGBTQI+ employees who are out at work are more innovative, more likely to be effective in their team, and more likely to provide excellent service, than those who aren’t out.
