Can a trucking company hire a CDL driver and assume the driver is properly trained (Part 2)? No! Almost every State CDL manual addresses this in the Introduction of Section 1. "To get a CDL, you must pass knowledge and skills tests. This manual will help you pass the tests. This manual is not a substitute for a truck driver class or program. Formal training is the most reliable way to learn the many special skills required for safely driving a large commercial vehicle and becoming a professional driver in the trucking industry." How well do you know Tires? Beauty Ring indicates how well the tire is centered. Michelin Truck Tire Service Manual. Why align a new OTR chassis. Is there a valid reason? Chassis must be loaded for a few thousand miles (10K-15K) to allow the rubber/urethane suspension bushings to “seat”, so yes axles move. How often does your aligner calibrate and own that equipment? Is the Tech certified with B CDL? Before/after report? Factories calibrate every day/shift w/Certified Tech's. Factory alignment does have a flaw. No weight has been applied or miles driven (same as a just delivered). Preforming vocational alignment (after the body is mounted), along with loaded miles and time should be considered. Factories apply generic pressure around 100 PSI, so someone needs to set the correct pressure for the application and weight. 34K divided by 8 dual tires = 4,250 lbs./tire. 34K/4 wide base = 8,500 lbs. 12-13,000/2 steer = 6,000-6,500 lbs. Work with your local tire experts for proper steer and drive inflation because pressures are probably not the same. Bending axles is never recommended. Dana Creep/Site design ratings for example is: 12K - 16,800 lbs. 13.2K – 18,480. 14.6K – 20,440. 20K – 28,000. and 22K – 30,800, so axle manufactures account for added weight at 5 MPH off road. Ensure the correct steering gears take the weight with lift axles raised. No OEM does the creep/site math, it’s up to the Sales expert.
