As a transplant from St. Louis, I can't say enough good things about Austin, Texas. I moved here in January, joining my co-founder Patrick to pursue our dream of building the most exquisite Pickleball courts on Earth. Since then, we've found endless support from kind and colorful people, also working to make their entrepreneurial visions come true. The city's future couldn't be brighter. And big shoutout to Mason Marozas and The Loop ATX for helping us kickstart our Austin network. New transplants should check them out!

It's inspiring to see business owners dedicating their time to learning and evolving together. It requires openness, honesty, and transparency, which means being vulnerable enough to acknowledge weaknesses or blind spots and being receptive to others' input for personal growth.

I can't express strongly enough how important Jesse Cole's mantra of Fans First should be incorporated in how we interact with donors and how admissions should interact with prospective students and families in the private educational sector. You may have the best glossy brochures or produced videos, but they all fall short on the personal interactions you have with your donors and families. These interactions are game changers. They are the difference between getting a gift or having a student enroll in your school. The student ambassador who connects with a child during a visit to campus or taking the time to have coffee with a new parent and sharing personally the incredible impact giving has on your school - moves mountains. If you haven't taken a moment to check out Fans First or check out the Savanah Bananas - you should make it your summer reading. It's a game changer.

Fenway Park was the biggest challenge we've ever had as an organization. Before the game, we had our Fans First chat with over 200 plus employees, players and cast members and I shared with the team how we could be our best in the moment. From Day 1, I've always believed in focusing on the fans first. But when facing real adversity, we often need more than just that mindset as our north star. We need to know how to put the fan first. What I've learned is that the greatest performers know how to slow things down. When things speed up, they can focus even better on what's in front of them in that moment. I shared how while we would have the most eyes on us we've ever had, it was the eyes right in front of us that mattered most. My goal was for everyone to take the extra time with fans, embrace the moments and truly be present. If we did that and focused on one fan at a time, everything else would take care of itself. After the game, I was truly proud of everyone on our team. I heard countless fans first stories and moments shared by our group and by fans all over social media. With every challenge, we get better and learn more. But who we are, what we stand for and the heart of this organization will never change.

#GradSchoolLife + #StartUpLife: Doing overdue homework & applying for a #hackathon, #application due at midnight, instead of driving an hour each way from Cookeville to Nashville to listen to this band after giving a keynote to undergrads. I had stayed the whole day to network and immerse in Tenn Tech culture. The trade off was then not immersing in the music or nightlife culture of Tennessee. You can’t do it all. I chose more time with the students. Since selling my car when I moved to #NYC it was only my second time driving since then (in ~5 years). I still am perfectly confident on the roads but doing too much and burning the candle on both ends had given me a slight migraine. Driving at night with bright lights from cars is a known trigger. I had to be sensible (as annoying and frustrating as it is to be sensible). Stayed in and ordered Cajun while trying to get my #systemsdynamics model to work on clunky, non-intuitive software that Massachusetts Institute of Technology and MIT Sloan School of Management professors love to use. Renting the car? Wow. An ordeal. The counter, in a far corner, was not visible, so I waited on hold to get customer service and was misdirected to go directly to the lot. After walking in several wrong directions, and tripping over a curb and falling very in gracefully with all my luggage, was told at the lot to go back to the terminal and find the counter. Then, despite the promise otherwise, the car I got both lacked phone charging and navigation and was told to go back to the terminal again. At that point I gave up because with the flight delay and this inefficiency, I was already two hours late for dinner with the dean. I made it through the hour drive without my phone, used for navigation, dying. The mild headache that I had started with in Boston got worse, but still was manageable. (I had thought to just Uber but was uncertain how reliable that would be in a small college town in Tennessee. Plus, when I looked up the cost of Nashville to Cookeville Uber, it was >$150 each way.) Life is full of FOMO. I also missed out on the #startup and #entrepreneurship mixer at Harvard Innovation Labs last night and Japan Night by the MIT Sloan Fellows MBA Program cohort. Until I find a way to clone myself, these things will happen. Luckily, now am well rested enough to hike to some nearby waterfalls. Had hoped to get to the Smokey Mountains but that too is not realistic for this trip, with 3-4 hour drives each way and a flight tonight. Tomorrow is booked up with class group meetings for assignments. #GradStudentLife I might be a city gal but do love to get into nature. “Thousands of tired, nerve-shaken, over-civilized people are beginning to find out that going to the mountains is going home; that wildness is a necessity; and that mountain parks and reservations are useful not only as fountains of timber and irrigating rivers, but as fountains of life.” -John Muir https://lnkd.in/eUswVz6s
