The buzz around the commercial exploitation of #drones as #AirTaxi and other larger #UAV stuff is very enticing, however the rapid development in this space is circumspect. It all depends how affordable the #AAM is in totality and how we could assure and insure people below the upcoming traffic above our heads. The lower #airspace is a very attractive piece of real estate, vastly unexploited, but putting up a humongous infrastructure to monitor, regulate and police the manner and unmanned machines is an equally challenging task.

Something unspoken in the #eVTOL space: Where are all of these eVTOL pilots going to come from? I hear a lot about the "pilot shortage" and the difficulty in training pilots to feed into the system. But, if you're a pilot, you want the big bucks and flying opportunities from a Boeing 737 or Boeing 787. Why on earth would you want to fly an eVTOL between, say, Manhattan and JFK...day in, and day out. Not only would it be incredibly boring, but it's crowded airspace to begin with. Are eVTOL opportunities just a time builder on the way to the airlines? If I've spent $100,000 to become a commercial pilot, eVTOL ain't my first choice... What say you? Passenger #multicopters - By Federal Aviation Administration definition, multicopters are rotorcraft, but unlike a helicopter or gyrocopter, they can't perform an autorotation landing. Its actually academic because there is a very limited commercial market for passenger multicopters as they are too slow, too small a range, have a very limited payload and are unlikely to be as safe as a powered lift aircraft. The only real markets for passenger multicopters are air tourism (EHang (NASDAQ: EH) ) and initial PPL training, or recreational ultralite versions.

The coming electric air taxi revolution in pictures…. There are literally hundreds of aircraft in development. There are a handful that have been flying for years and are progressing to commercial certification (it is an enormous step to go from a flying prototype to an aircraft able to take paying passengers). The future is going to be amazing - these front runners can be seen up close at various airshows around the world. They will initially simply replace helicopter operations using existing airports and helipads. The revolution comes when the nexus between aviation and airports is broken and property developers can incorporate vertiports into their plans.
