✨WHY DID BONNEY's BSc JOURNEY TAKE 5 YEARS INSTEAD OF THE CONVECTIONAL 4? Will I say I may declare myself as the most resilient young adult to exist in 21st century? Life often throws challenges our way, and my journey through university was marked by significant trials. While pursuing my bachelor's degree in Environmental Science at KNUST, I faced severe health challenges that nearly crashed my educational dream in level 300. 👩🦼In 2016, an anterior cruciate ligament tear of my right knee, further dislocation of my pelvis, and dislocations in both knees as a result of too many anti-inflammatory drugs such as Arthro 7 & 8, Celebre, Diclofenac denk, Arthrosamine, and Arthrotec, Wellman, Osteocare, in my system. Health challenges forced me to defer my program, extending my undergraduate studies to five years (2014 -2019). Despite these physical setbacks, I remained determined to push forward. My vacations were filled with hospital and herbal treatments, leaving no room for #internship opportunities. Financial difficulties and depressions compounded my struggle, with all my savings directed towards medical treatments. Through it all, I found strength in encouraging fellow students and mentees facing financial or non-health-related challenges to persevere. This experience taught me the true meaning of resilience and the power of determination. Will you wonder how I managed to write semesters' exams even in my plight? or even how I was able to walk distances from my hostel to lecture halls whiles accepting my fate by applying faith? What about the extraordinary grades he made in his transcripts? Embracing the Culmination: Reflecting on a Six-Year University Journey🎓✨ Grateful as my six-year university journey nears its end! Reflecting on my final year, I've embraced the power of community, finding joy in shared challenges and experiences with colleagues, and seeking guidance from experienced seniors. My family and friends have been my pillars, serving as cheerleaders and advisor, their support means the world to me. Yes! Studying pharmacy is difficult but so is studying other courses. Others have been able to do it, why can’t you? In the demanding realm of pharmacy school, I've learned the pitfalls of complaining, opting for a conscious focus on hope and discipline, knowing my goals are achievable. Stepping out of my introverted comfort zone, I intentionally volunteered and led, fostering interactions with diverse backgrounds and fueling my growth as an individual. Adaptability has become a hallmark, crucial in the ever-changing clinical rotations. While transitioning can be frustrating, the ability to swiftly adapt and assimilate new knowledge is an invaluable skill for the future. Every journey has its challenges, but with unwavering faith in God, we persevere. What was the APPE rotation or internship that taught you the most? What lessons did you learn? Did you appreciate it at the time? I was recently reflecting on an internal medicine rotation I had in 2008 at Grandview Medical Center with Dr. Matt Kauflin, PharmD, BCPS. It was the most demanding rotation I had, and the only reason there was a close second was because I spent a month in the NICU and had no clue what I was doing. For this rotation with Dr. Kauflin, I remember the 45-minute commute in the dark early mornings, arriving each day around 5 a.m. and leaving well past 5 p.m., staying with the medical residents to finish rounds. While I’m convinced this rotation prepared me for the boards, the other lessons I learned have stayed with me. To show up on time and be prepared. To be ready to say, “I don’t know, but I’m ready to learn,” rather than talk in circles (and once taught, to make sure to study and remember that in the future because “I don’t know” isn’t an acceptable answer more than once). To understand that, yes, I was a student, but the team depended on me to be there. To realize I was capable of more than I had realized (and that someone else saw more in me than I did in myself). To know that growth comes outside of my comfort zone. To take responsibility for my learning and growth and to appreciate that there is no arrived. These are lessons that no classroom experience could have ever taught me.

Hi Network! As some of you know, I took a gap year after my A-levels. This was initially a really difficult decision for made, as I’ve always been someone who based my worth by my academics, grades, or my performance in school. However due to a variety of physical and mental health reason I ultimately decided to apply for deferred UCAS entries in October of 2022, and starting uni in October 2024. As the gap year draws to a close, I’m happy to report that this was the best decision I’ve ever made, and the most impactful year of my life thus far. I was not only able to finally receive help for a variety of health problems, but also managed to achieve so much I never thought was possible: - An internship with GSK and Clifford Chance (gained insight across a wide variety of industries!) - Gained work experience working as a remote admin, tutor, and classroom assistant - Financed my solo travels, staying in hostels and meeting amazing people - Met an amazing mentor Vanessa Viney, who exposed me to the Aerospace industry, leading me to attend extraordinary conferences and even try my hand at the Viasat Space Sustainability competition - …and so many more But above all, I was able to gain my sense of self and became my favourite version of myself. Receiving answers from the NHS at last for a whole variety of health issues I’ve been struggling with throughout sixth form, as well as my Autism diagnosis. My diagnosis is not something I mention a lot in talking about my achievements on here - but I feel like it is important for other neurodivergent students also in the same shoes as me to remember that it is ok to take time out for yourself; it sometimes leads you to flourish even more! So whether you’re currently debating on taking a gap year, or you are resitting your exams, or just figuring out your next steps after school, I hope this gave you some hope as to what your gap year can be like :) Here’s to the next chapter of my life at Imperial College London!
