EXPLORING SYSTEMIC RELATIONSHIP ATTRIBUTES IN WARDLEY MAPPING
I've always been captivated by Simon Wardley's approach to mapping an organization's strategic landscape. Recently, during a course, a group found it challenging to differentiate Wardley Mapping from Systemic Mapping or Constellations. Both involve boxes and lines, yet they serve distinct purposes.
This got me thinking about the potential for integrating insights from systemic constellations, which emphasize relationships, into Wardley Mapping. Wardley Mapping primarily focuses on how different system components evolve and interconnect within a value chain. However, understanding the nuances of these connections—dependencies, value flows—can deepen our strategic insights. Inspired by systemic constellations, we can apply attributes like strength, criticality, volatility, and latency to these connections.
SO WHY MIGHT THIS BE USEFUL?
I live in Bremerhaven, Germany. Occasionally, I want to travel to Hamburg by train. Looking at the map, you might think taking the direct route would be the best option. However, the connection via Bremen is stronger, using faster trains and fewer stops. Nevertheless, the slower connection is more reliable—so not only distances and placement but also the qualities of the connection matter.
SYSTEMIC RELATIONSHIP ATTRIBUTES
Strength:
Weak: Minor impact if altered.
Moderate: Noticeable impact if altered.
Strong: Significant impact if altered.
Criticality:
Non-critical: System functions without it.
Moderately critical: System performance is affected without it.
Highly critical: The system cannot function without it.
Volatility:
Stable: Consistent over time.
Moderately volatile: Occasional changes.
Highly volatile: Frequent changes.
Latency:
Low latency: Immediate interactions.
Moderate latency: Noticeable delay.
High latency: Significant delay.
By applying these attributes, we can better understand and manage critical and volatile connections to ensure system robustness.
Let's connect and discuss how we can leverage these insights to enhance our strategic approaches using Wardley Mapping.
