"His face was a bit distracing"🫣 We all know how gorgeous David Beckham is, but I definitely did not think it would come back to be used against him... David Beckham is the new face of Stella Artois, or should I be saying hand... The campaign launched with a social media campaign and a takeover of the time square billboards with pictures of Beckham holding a glass of Stella Artois, with the accompanying text “introducing the new face of Stella Artois” followed by “Unfortunately his face was a bit distracting” Why is this working then? ⭐️ Because it's different! Who's cut David Beckham out of his own campaign before?! ⭐️ It directly plays into Gen-Z humour and as we know they are the future so why wouldn't you want to get them talking? ⭐️ David Beckham is so well known that even just a picture of his hand is going to work for people to know who he is! ⭐️ Beckham is premium! Sounds weird right? But Beckham is promoted as premium, he doesn't do the cheap, so this makes the brand come across as premium! Lucky for them as well, the timing is perfect! (Well definitely not lucky, this was 100% planned) But summer is right around the corner, beer sales are notorious for a rise in the summer, every brit loves a sit in the garden with a cold beer on those few sunny days and so do a lot of other places! So now the shelves are being filled with Stella Artois and it's taking over! A story of how I almost gave up and why we still keep going. When I joined Walk&Win, let’s just say - the reactions were mixed. As someone who has had experience both as a founder and as someone managing programs for founders, I was quickly reminded how easy it is for people to share opinions on what you do (just like I did as a mentor before) and how challenging it is to actually run the business. We’ve been told anything from “this idea is not original” to “why would anyone pay for this”, and some much more vulgar comments I’ve personally received in my time in customer support while attempting to understand users’ feedback more closely - I might share some in the future when the “statute of limitations” passes. We graduated from a local accelerator, and though our pitch was good during the Demo Day, we were quickly humbled when the VCs said they would only consider us if we had anywhere from $5 to $20K MRR (understandable, but still - ouch). I’d be lying if I said I’ve personally not been close to giving up on the project myself. But here is what has kept me going. In less than 2 months of us launching and a low marketing budget, we had over 4k installs, over half of which remained as active users. Over 40% of our daily active users joined our walking competitions (March). But more importantly, I had never seen such a loyal and committed user base before. From people literally “stalking” each others’ step counts to others asking to return certain rewards that we ran out of in our marketplace because they keep using the app to get them. Is the product or our model perfect? No Did I think it would be easy to successfully launch a business giving my prior experience? Yes Did that actually happen? I guess, time will tell. As fellow founders will relate, it is easy to get caught up in daily operations and slightly ignore an important part of why this business was started - and that is to help businesses as well as our users. Who do you show first? This new car is my Aunt’s. Sent by text from the carpark at Aldi in Loughborough. She was excited to get it; had been a without a car for quite some weeks. We get excited about cars in our family. Her parents, my grandparents, had got through a good few in their lifetimes. In the days when you bought cars with cash you actually had and kept them for a long time. Each new car; a new era. And with each new car, they would be very proud to show them off to us. They came from a place where they had nothing except a bit of land to feed themselves from. So the four wheels they were able to buy - we’re really something. We’d get in, put visors down, push buttons, comment on the upholstery and go for a spin down country lanes, til the whole family had had their spin. Little ritual. And when we got big, and got our own cars, the little ritual continued. Spin. Country lanes. Excitement. Pride. So this time, when she got her new wheels it was bittersweet. Because she wanted to show mum and dad, her biggest cheerleaders. And this was the first time, they would not be around to see the new wheels. And to see - this new era. Little things are Big things.
