Sustainability continues to evolve. It has to. Unfortunately, that makes it more difficult to integrate sustainability initiatives into your business. Many of my clients are struggling to recruit sustainability talent as a result. So, here’s an update on some of the key skills you need in your sustainability teams. Firstly, an aptitude for communicating, influencing and negotiating. Problems need to be framed so they are received in the best possible way by internal and external stakeholders. Secondly, broader strategic or commercial perspectives are more important than technical sustainability functions. You want somebody who can not just decarbonise your company’s operations, but somebody who will consider whether it your business will be fit to thrive in a low-carbon economy. Thirdly, adaptability. Since sustainability is continually advancing, the balance of skills you need to work in this space change continually. You're 100% spot on here Dagmara Kruczkowska. Sustainability leadership is about knowing which battles to fight and crucially, why. The 'why' helps you to zoom out for a reality check (point 2) whilst also helping tell the story to engage those who matter (point 1). For point 1 it's also vital to step into the shoes of those stakeholders to understand their interests. For point 3, read, talk and listen to others, then read some more - you need a broad body of information and understanding to make new connections and innovations from whatever is thrown your way.

𝗦𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗘𝗦𝗚 𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗱𝘀 ESG is one of the fastest-growing fields, as both investors and corporations begin to integrate sustainability into their business model. This is resulting in the increased demand for ESG-minded leaders and executives across all sectors- meaning recruitment firms are having to adapt their strategies to find the best talent. ESG issues are having a significant impact on businesses globally, with more of an integrated approach- companies are not only expected to perform well financially but also demonstrate their commitment to environmental stewardship, social responsibility, and ethical governance. It has been reported that fewer than 40% of companies across sectors are on track to meet their sustainability commitments. Companies will place a greater emphasis on hiring executives with experience in this area- increasing demand. More realistic sustainability goals are being set by organisations and while the business world begins to shift its focus towards ESG there are still many unknowns when it comes to this sector. However, one thing is certain, the future capabilities of executives in sustainability will be crucial to the success of any organisation and recruitment will play an essential role within it.
