Tonight, I sent my career committee an update on my career and professional development activities from the last half of 2023! What is a career committee you ask? Read on to see how I have developed this practice!
In grad school, I was encouraged by Susanna Harris, PhD to consider putting together a career committee. This committee is similar to a thesis committee in that it is a group of people invested in my success as a person, both career-wise and personal-wise. At this point, I began considering who would be part of that committee and what its purpose would be.
When I was finishing up my PhD, Hector L. Franco, Ph.D. shared how he has a career committee and writes updates for them where he seeks to receive feedback as well as support for questions he has. This idea really resonated with me and has formed the basis of my career updates!
Every 6 months, I sit down for an hour or so and develop a 1-page update that details some progress/wins/challenges in my career and provides information on career development opportunities I have had. My goal is to summarize 6 months of my professional life while at the same time highlighting career questions and opening myself up to any feedback/recommendations from my committee.
In this update, I also asked my career committee "What is the biggest lesson you learned in 2023 related to your career?" I value learning from the good/hard moments of others to help inform decisions I make in my career.
With that said, for my friends/followers here on LinkedIn, what is the biggest lesson you learned in 2023 related to your career?
