“If only I had a bit more time…” This phrase from a founder often portends an inside round of capital. More time for the market to mature… more time for the new hires to have an impact… more time for the product to be shipped. Rare is the startup that simply grows up and to the right without interruption. For those lucky few, raising capital from external sources is straightforward. But when you hit bumps in the road, sometimes the right answer is taking less capital from known sources. Sounds simple. It’s not. While raising inside financing (aka bridge rounds) might involve fewer conversations than a traditional round of capital, there is a great deal of complexity for a founder to navigate. One can easily identify a good investor from a mediocre one from their questions. Let me give an example. A mediocre investor asks: How are you different from the other companies in the market? They ask this question, because they basically think that the most unique will win, or that by being different enough, you can compete better. A good investor asks instead: Why are you better suited to tackle this problem better than everyone else in the market? They ask this, because they know, that there will be a lot who are doing a lot of things, a lot of things will seem cool, and a lot will seem boring, but eventually the one who lasts and grows will be whoever really understands his market, his product, and aligns them enough to fit, grow and go places. Why I am saying this, because great founders deserve great investors (and there are great ones), but we need as founders to vet for the best ones, because the best ones are also vetting for the best founders. #startups #venturecapital #Investing
