I may be beating a dead horse at this point but Austin and Dallas associate hiring continues to be slow. Let's look at Austin today and Dallas tomorrow. For 3Ls looking for jobs, do not put all your eggs in the Austin basket. All open positions will now have a clear and firm application deadline." I received this message this morning. When I work in a position that hires for open positions, I make it a point to fill all open positions. Why are some places content with leaving open positions unfilled? For experienced attorneys on the lateral law firm market, more applications do not equal better results. Instead, spend more time on targeted applications where you are actually a skill and seniority match for the role. If you can leverage a referral or apply through a recruiter, do that too. If there is a firm or company you are particularly interested in, don’t just apply to anything and everything they have. Why is recruiting the hardest sales job? Because candidates are people. My job is to introduce attorneys to law firms. An attorney. A person. A human being. Someone with a mind and feelings of their own. If I sell you a car, I can guarantee it won't decide at the last minute that it doesn't want to go home with you and wants to stay with its current owner. But I can't make that guarantee with an attorney. No matter how many conversations I've had with the attorney and how many promises the attorney makes that they want the job and want to work for your law firm, I can't guarantee that the attorney won't change their mind or accept a counteroffer. And I'm glad I don't have that power. It's hard enough to control my own mind let alone someone else's!
