𝐖𝐞 𝐧𝐞𝐞𝐝 𝐚𝐧𝐧𝐮𝐚𝐥 𝐢𝐧𝐯𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐄𝐔𝐑 𝟏𝟒𝟎𝐛𝐧 𝐮𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐥 𝟐𝟎𝟑𝟎 🌍 Europe has the potential to become self-sufficient in power by 2030, by establishing a zero-emission power system. On a European level, realising this once in a lifetime opportunity would cost EUR 140 bn a year until 2030, and EUR 100 bn a year until 2040. To put this into context: We have spent EUR 792 bn just to protect consumers from the effects of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.  ⚡ From an investment perspective, the rate of return on a renewable energy-based European energy system will be high, particularly in view of the spiralling costs of maintaining the fossil-fuelled status quo, without even considering the advantages offered by clean energy on ecological and sovereignty level.   📗 These are some findings of the report “European Power Sovereignty Through Renewables by 2030”. The UK’s Minister for Energy Security and Net Zero, Justin Tomlinson, delivered a keynote address this morning at the opening of the North Sea Decarbonisation Conference, focusing on the current state and future of the energy industry in the UK. He also engaged in discussions with industry executives, addressing various opportunities and challenges facing the sector. During the event, participants engaged in a series of discussions. One key session titled "Unlocking the North Sea as a Green Powerplant" delved into the innovative energy solutions that are positioning the North Sea as a crucial area for green energy development. Another topic, "Hydrogen: Hype or Hope?" explored the potential and realities of hydrogen energy within the UK and broader European context. Additionally, there were focused dialogues on the advancements in offshore wind and marine energy, highlighting the ongoing and future projects in these areas. In one presentation by Sharanya, Sharanya Kumaramurthy, EIC Market Intelligence Manager & Interim Head of Consult, outlined the evolution and trajectory of offshore wind energy within the North Sea. She detailed the European Union's 2023 initiatives, like the EU Wind Power Package and Grid Action Plan, designed to enhance energy output and modernize infrastructure. Europe can become the first climate-neutral continent –according to a study led by the PIK - Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research. The study shows that Europe already has all the necessary technologies to achieve power sovereignty and electricity generation free of fossil fuel resources by 2030. Therefore, Europe needs an enabling legislative framework as the growth of renewable energy has been too low to meet targets, the study states.
