I had an interesting conversation with a coach who was watching my master class. He wondered if velocity-based training is also useful for the recreational athlete. The article below summarizes this well: "Velocity-based resistance training might be more effective than percentage-based training in maximal strength improvement, in which velocity-based resistance training is more suitable for athletes in season, while percentage-based training is more suitable for the general sports population." My simplified, overarching athlete development philosophy: 1 - Increase the amount of force an athlete is capable of producing (squat, hinge, lunge, push, pull). 2 - Improve the athlete’s ability to produce said force quickly (sprints, jumps, med ball throws and/or oly lifts). I’ve got them listed as 1, 2, but these things are done concurrently. #strengthandconditioning #strengthandconditioningcoach

President / Director of High Performance at Silvestri Sports Performance. PhD Candidate at St. Mary's University in Sport, Allied Health & Performance Sciences
When working with athletes, and many pieces of the puzzle in athlete development being involved, this can become a difficult area to manage. However it is important, if all involved with the development of the athlete and team can have the same unified focus, this becomes increasingly simple to navigate. The best way to go about this is to have a unified approach of keeping athletes injury free. If we, as strength and conditioning coaches, sport scientists, rehabilitation professionals, and sport coaches, can all have a unified approach of keeping all the athletes injury free as our main priority, this will lead to more time of play for the athlete and less time missed due to injury. Yes injury is never fully avoidable, and yes the result of competition should be important in sport, however the main focus needs to always be on the athlete and always be on keeping that athlete injury free.
Silvestri Sports Performance on Instagram: "Training philosophy surrounds the idea of what an individual beliefs in regard to training. The most important factor in this discussion should be keeping the athlete injury free. ——— @silvestrisportsperformance What we do today makes our body more resilient for tomorrow. www.silvestrisportsperformance.ca 416-901-7717 ——— #silvestrisportsperformance #str

Here’s a contrast pairing that some of our more advanced athletes are doing, as part of our Athlete Development Program, to develop power and elasticity: • A1 - Trap bar jumps (non-CMJ) • A2 - Depth jump into continuous hurdle jumps Do any other S&C coaches use the same, or similar exercise pairings? #strengthandconditioning #strengthandconditioningcoach
