Last month, I wrote about the newly implemented CSRD - the EU's sustainability reporting regulation which is set to bring monumental change to how businesses look at sustainability. Though corporate disclosures might not seem like the most thrilling topic, its clear from speaking to experts like Patrick Moloney (Ramboll) and Nhung K. (PwC) that this directive can greatly increase the weight of sustainability issues in business strategy. Likewise, while insight from CDP highlighted minor flaws in the water-related disclosures, Claire Elsdon noted that the CDP welcomes the CSRD as a key method for pushing businesses to practical action on water conservation. In this article for Global Water Intelligence (GWI), I looked specifically at what it could mean for the water sector. As European industry comes to terms with their water consumption (in a public report, directly comparable to their peers), there's likely to be increasing demand for water efficient technologies and reuse systems. On the flip side of the coin, large companies within the water sector will be required to disclose on a wide breadth of ESG topics. While this may be a challenge, its also a key opportunity to stand out from the crowd. Given the wide reach of the CSRD and the growing trend towards sustainability reporting globally, this article is relevant to all large companies with water materiality. Corporate Water Reporting developments mark the latest in a growing list of initiatives focusing on nature, and the role business plays in managing its future.

European Commission president Ursula von der Leyen has moved to strengthen water resilience with the appointment of a new commissioner Jessika Roswall as commissioner for #Environment, #Water Resilience and a Competitive #CircularEconomy, restrictions on more #PFAS or 'forever chemicals', and the registration of a European Citizens' Initiative, entitled 'ECI for a #Water-Smart and Resilient Europe'. We wish this new European Commission the best of energy and express our commitment to provide technological solutions for good and contribute to the important mission entrusted to Jessika Roswall: develop a more circular and more competitive economy, leading the work on #water resilience which is a big priority for the years ahead. We hope Teresa Ribera Rodríguez, the first executive vice president in charge of a "clean, just and competitive transition" and all the Commissioners, will support and enhance her work. https://lnkd.in/drietq3U

Dear colleagues, friends and network 2024 is a pivotal year for the European Union, as the European elections take place and the Green Deal launched in 2019 enters its final phase of implementation. It's an opportunity for us to take stock of this period, and to point the way to the EU's ambitions for the next term. What will environmental policies look like after the green deal? How can we make the EU a resilient and self-sufficient continent from a 'net-zero impact' perspective? I do believe ❤️ that competitiveness of our European industry (manufacturing companies and waste management sector) goes hand to hand with high environmental ambitions and I do believe ❤️ that We, collectively with NGOs, Civil Society, Policy Makers can come to consensus or even common views if we dare to be transparent, if we work together 🙏 and if we build our confidence on science-based knowledge. It is a complete change of paradigm for the next 5 five years. Under the partnership with Regions4 and Under2 coalition our global environmental coalition partners MEC. Ms. Shyla Peters and delegation had the pleasure of being hosted by Scotland's Cabinet secretary to discuss matters of environmental concerns and partnerships. The following area's of potential partnerships were identified: 1. Technological advancement to deal with waste management and landfills. 2. Expansion of recycling to include a diverse product range (mixed waste) to protect environment. 3. The journey to a Nett zero green economy. 4. National Planning framework for local government in terms of waste management. 5. Enhance monitoring and compliance through Levy systems. 6. Sharing and exchange policy and advance technical skills. 7. Enhance incentive scheme for waste economy. 8. Establish a monitoring tool to track emission reduction progress. The engagement concluded with a gift exchange to symbolize and strengthen memberships of both countries to Regions4 and Under 2 coalition. MEC, HOD and the delegation concluded their days itinerary with a dinner with the Honorable Premier's Executive office of Kwa-Zulu Natal and Western Cape respectively. #GrowingGautengTogether
