U.S. core PCE (the #Fed's preferred #inflation gauge) came down to 2.57% y-over-year in May lowest reading since Q1 of 2021. Initial jobless claims came in at a mild 233k, but continuing claims rose to a 2 year high of 1.83 million. This is a big week for #jobs data in the U.S. with the JOLTs report (expectations 7.9 million job openings) and the NFP #jobs report (expectations 190k new jobs). Our #investment theme is on the remarkable U.S. equity market concentration in Q2. Two stocks in the S&P 500 contributed 76% of the total return of the overall index over the quarter. Core #PCE (the #Fed's preferred #inflation gauge) came in at 2.8% year-over-year. Not bad, but the last three months has seen some firming. This week we have the U.S. #ISM, the #JOLTS report, and end the week with the monthly #jobs report. We recap Q1 which was defined by the momentum factor (which emphasizes stocks that that were up the most over the prior 6-12 months). 👋 Last week, U.S. equities took a hit after a U.S. debt downgrade, but things got interesting with a "goldilocks-like" jobs report. The S&P 500 and Nasdaq 100 dipped, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average held up better. Fitch Ratings downgraded the U.S. credit rating, citing governance issues and expected fiscal deterioration. On the bright side, the jobs report showed 187,000 jobs added in July, slightly below expectations. This could mean the Fed might be less aggressive, leading to hopes for a "soft landing." The domestic market sustained its upward momentum, with a reduction in US PCE inflation raising hopes for a rate cut by the FED in September. This optimism contributed to the strong performance of IT stocks. We anticipate this trend will persist in the near term due to expectations of a rebound in discretionary spending. Investors are now focusing on upcoming US job data and the Fed Chair's speech for further indication on interest rates.

U.S. stocks declined last week following Fitch’s downgrade of the U.S. credit rating to AA+ from AAA, citing “expected fiscal deterioration” over the next three years. The July employment report showed that the U.S. economy continues to create new jobs, boosting hopes that the Fed may be able to tame inflation without creating a spike in unemployment, otherwise known as a soft landing.
