If you sincerely believe your own idea is powerful and compelling, then why would you feel the need to go after others’ beliefs? Surely you would feel confident enough that in time your view would prevail on its own merits – if it is as persuasive as you think it is? It is interesting to see how much zero-sum thinking dominates social media – whereas in ordinary daily life most people (as best I can tell) do not practise such thinking. The idea that to promote your belief or cause you need to disparage and diminish others’ stances is perplexing. In fact, in a liberal democracy, many views can sit relatively harmoniously side by side. A good example is the way in which people attack Christmas and refuse to even use the word ‘Christmas’. I have seen a number of companies on Linked In for example insist on referring to "holidays" rather than Christmas. Presumably the intent is to reinforce that not everyone is Christian and not everyone celebrates Christmas. This is a valid objective to adopt in a free society. But why do you have to attack Christmas to pursue this intent? If you would like to promote other traditions or even new festivities, then it is possible to do this as a positive agenda on its own. You do not have to disparage the long-standing Christmas holiday and those who celebrate it. When I see zero sum thinking, it suggests to me two things: firstly, the person deep down lacks confidence in their own ability to persuade others to their idea and secondly, they are not interested in bringing people together around their idea but rather in dividing them further.

🎄 In Poland, Christmas Eve is the star of the show – it’s the big day for festive celebrations! Since moving to the UK, my house has become a merry mix of Polish and English traditions over the holidays. We kick things off on Christmas Eve with a family dinner featuring 12 traditional dishes (yes, 12! It’s a marathon, not a sprint), and we always leave an empty seat at the table for an unexpected guest. Then, Christmas Day brings stockings, crackers, and all the classics. It’s a cultural fusion that’s as chaotic as it is magical, and I wouldn’t have it any other way. It’s also a reminder that when traditions come together, they create something unique and meaningful - kind of like financial planning! Whether you’re blending savings strategies, balancing short-term goals with long-term investments, or planning for future generations, it’s all about making it work for you and your family. Here’s to embracing the festive season, whatever traditions you follow. Wesołych Świąt and Merry Christmas! 🎁✨

As we gather with our loved ones this festive season, let’s take a moment to reflect on the year we've had, a year filled with its share of challenges and triumphs. The world has faced so much, from the ongoing struggles for human rights and environmental protection to the fight against poverty and inequality. Yet, amid these trials, we’ve seen remarkable resilience and compassion. Christmas is not just a celebration; it’s a reminder of the power of community, kindness, and togetherness. Each act of generosity, whether big or small, has the ability to create ripples of change. This year, let’s honor the sacrifices made by those who work tirelessly for a better world, the farmers who nourish us, the healthcare workers who protect us, and the advocates who fight for the voiceless. As we unwrap our gifts and share meals, let’s remember those in need, those who might not have the same comforts we enjoy. May our hearts be filled with empathy and our actions driven by a spirit of giving. Let’s extend our hands to lift each other, embodying the true essence of the season. Peace on earth will come to stay when we live Christmas every day. – Helen Steiner Rice This Christmas, may your homes be filled with love, laughter, and warmth. May you find joy in the little moments, create beautiful memories with your loved ones, and embrace the hope of new beginnings in the coming year. Together, let’s make a promise to carry the spirit of Christmas into every day. Let’s advocate for kindness, inclusivity, and sustainability, ensuring that everyone can celebrate the joys of life in the future.
