The Smart Surfaces Coalition has some exciting news for the Construction Industry! 🚀 We’re thrilled to announce the launch of CarbonStar®, a groundbreaking tool that brings transparency to the carbon intensity of concrete. With CarbonStar®, manufacturers, designers, and construction professionals can now make greener, more sustainable choices to reduce the environmental impact of concrete, one of the most widely used—and carbon-intensive—materials in the world. But what exactly is CarbonStar®? It’s a binational standard and calculator designed to measure the embodied carbon in concrete, helping stakeholders track and reduce emissions. Embodied carbon, the emissions produced during material production, is often overlooked or inconsistently measured—yet concrete production alone accounts for 8% of global greenhouse emissions. Concrete is carbon-intensive because of the energy needed in its production process, especially when manufacturing cement. However, innovative solutions are emerging, such as recycling aggregates and injecting CO₂ into concrete mixes, which reduce emissions.  This is where CarbonStar® makes a real difference. It provides a universal approach for calculating and comparing the carbon intensity of concrete products, regardless of their production methods.
