The Government and industry have developed a roadmap to encourage more timber use in construction. The TIMBER IN CONSTRUCTION ROADMAP (TiC) focuses on seven key themes: improving data on timber’s carbon impact, promoting safe and sustainable timber use, expanding industry skills, ensuring a sustainable timber supply, addressing fire safety for engineered timber, boosting collaboration with insurers, and driving innovation in timber construction systems. These initiatives aim to build a safer, greener, and more capable timber construction sector. The TiC Roadmat support the Government's ambition to build 1.5 million homes. Build Smarter. Social Value and Sustainability in Peterborough Professor Ross Renton, Principal at ARU Peterborough, describes the importance of building in social value and sustainability into the delivery of his Phase 3 Living Lab. #CarboniCa is the Morgan Sindall Construction intelligent carbon calculator. Our team including Ella Shuttleworth, Myles Higby, & Matt Cade along with MCW Architects, Smith and Wallwork & CPW have used CarboniCa from tender stage to completion, continuously updating assessments of measurement of materials being used, their carbon impact, the opportunity to use alternative low carbon options, but also capturing site deliveries, waste, site fuel consumption (HVO of course!) to provide the Client team with factual data to assist with their own carbon literacy and ever greater carbon awareness. We managed to save 258.2 tonnes of carbon from RIBA stage 3 to 5, whilst also delivering £74 million of social value impact in the local community.

The recent Autumn Budget announced the government’s £5 billion+ investment to support its target of 1.5 million built homes in the next five years. With this news, there is a big opportunity for the structural timber industry to build more sustainable homes, quickly. With the speed of construction and ability to be made weather-tight faster compared to masonry, timber frame can play an important role in tackling this housing target. We’ve been manufacturing timber frame solutions for over 40 years, so Pinewood Structures welcomes this new development in funding.
