Your cannot survive fighting your enemies and allies. Don’t loose a valuable team member because you have to be right about every tiny aspect of a project. Let the small things go and give a little control to others on the team as long as it does not affect the main objective. You do not have to have complete control or be the only one with the answers. People will resect you more and stay loyal this way.

For the brief times that I was in a managing position (team leader or a bit above), I firmly stood by two principles: 1. You are there to protect your team (especially in large companies) 2. You should not differentiate yourself from the company. What's your approach?

Create confidence to the team that you can be trusted and meet up to the commitment. Of course you can't control things that are linked with others but try to ensure that you Live up to the commitment of the things which are in your hand.

💬 Xabi Alonso: ❝It has evolved a lot, fifteen years ago the approach you had and the analysis before you went out on the field were much more abstract concepts: let’s go press, let’s go change the game, let’s go play with the high line. But for this to happen you have to work it first, you have to teach how to do it, how to coordinate movements. It has become much more sophisticated, both the analysis and the tactical approach. For me these small movements, they are a great asset to a team, if you want to understand the game is because things happen these concepts are very important. Because in order to attack well, you have to get the ball out of the back well, for me it has to be done that way, to avoid having problems in defense by doing high pressure. So I think it’s getting more and more complicated, it’s more and more like a chess game, I make a move using this system and then the other person changes my system, what do I have to do to counter it? And me liking soccer and enjoying the game, it’s very exciting. All this then has to be combined with talent, but talent is very difficult to work with, to prepare. What I have to prepare for is everything that happens first to then allow those with talent to make an impact, and that is what is unpredictable in the game. That’s how I understand it and how I see it❞.

When you surround yourself with good people, you force yourself to confront your own weaknesses. Good people will be the first to support you, and tell you your strengths. You'll learn these quickly. But you will also learn where you are NOT strong - and where you can improve. Building your team is an exercise not just in strength - but in humility. And humility is one of the most crucial steps in becoming great at anything you do.

Navy Seals assessment consists of two fundamentals: Trust and Performance. Trust is rarely assessed in a structured way by large companies. Yet it is such an important fundamental for a successful team! Indeed, there are difficulties in assessing trust in a structured way! But if there is no trust, it is extremely difficult to deliver long-term results. Great story!

Failure hurts. It feels personal. Leading a team is hard. but here’s the thing: if everything’s smooth your team probably isn’t growing. a high impact incident, a feature that tanks, a missed deadline, How might you use the failure as fuel for what’s next.
