Carbon capture is essential to decarbonize the hard-to-abate cement industry as 54% of cement's CO2 footprint is unavoidable process emissions from the calcination of limestone to produce clinker. The cost of capturing this unavoidable CO2 should be the minimum possible to avoid the high-cost premiums passed down to customers. Unfortunately, the cost of typical carbon capture technology applied on cement kilns such as amine scrubbing ($80/tCO2 avoided) and calcium looping ($60/tCO2 avoided) is quite high. Hence inexpensive carbon capture solutions, tailor-made for the cement industry are essential for its decarbonization. LEILAC is one such novel ground-breaking technology developed by Australian industrial technology company Calix that aims to reduce the capture cost to $25/tCO2 and CO2 avoided cost to $30/tCO2. Did you know that, unlike other industries, most of the CO2 produced in the manufacture of cement and lime is unavoidable? Cement is made by heating limestone with clay and other materials. When heated to high temperatures, limestone (CaCO3) is converted into calcium oxide or quicklime (CaO), releasing CO2 in the process. The unavoidable process CO2 emissions account for the majority of the emissions from cement and lime production, with the balance resulting from the energy emissions required to heat the reaction. Decarbonising the hard-to-abate cement and lime industries requires a solution that addresses both the process and energy emissions.
