I help companies grow their quality content output by getting content leaders out of the editing minutiae. 1,000+ bylines to my name in my career. Serial entrepreneur who loves travel, whiskey, skiing, and German cars.

My editing company now has 18 people. We're fully remote, and we'll stay that way. Why? Because creative work best happens wherever you're most creative. We're spread across Colorado, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Texas, Wyoming, El Salvador, and Canada. Instead of paying for offices, we'll put that budget towards: - Semi-often in-person meetups for groups who work together closely - Stuff to make our employees' lives easier working from home - Better pay for everyone Remote work lets us do our best work and still have balanced lives without commutes and traffic. Travel lets us get together and see new places. Being together in-person is still important, but not all the time like we thought in the past. I'm bullish on remote work. I have been since I started working from home (and wherever I want to in the world) almost 9 years ago. You? How's your company structured? Let me know below 👇

Remote work is where it's AT. It's not for everyone. But it works for a lot of people, and there are so many upsides: Better focus, better communication, solutions over politics, lower emissions... If you've got the organization, structure, and communication to make it work, it's the best.

+1 Curious your thoughts on frequency of "Semi-often in-person meetups." Quarterly? Bi-annual? As wanted?

I explored the beauty of remote work in year 2020 just before pandemic, when I was doing a job outside the city. I spent most of my time in traveling. At that time decided to establish a set up for remote/online work instead of physical job. By the grace of almighty now I am full time remote worker from home for last 2 years. I am trying to expand my team as per your pattern, but not find the persons with full devotion. But hopefully I will succeed

Remote work can significantly impact work-life balance, offering benefits like increased productivity, cost savings, and access to a global talent pool. However, it also presents challenges such as potential isolation and the need for clear communication and goal-setting. Balancing these aspects is key to a successful remote work experience.

While remote is extremely possible for my current work at a bank since I data entry closing documents review, the company hasn’t stepped into the 21st century of digitally uploading these documents. At least not yet. There is supposed to be an AI test coming to my location in August/September. It’ll be interesting to witness the drastic adjustment since management’s concern when being told about AI was, “Will that cause cloud to limit the computer system space?” Will this open up remote work opportunities? I’m unsure since my guess is, many of us will lose our jobs to how AI will review the docs in faster time.

I’m currently tied to a wired in server access related to in studio/test kitchen work so I’m on site everyday 8am-5pm. I spend so much time taking notes/writing emails on my phone because we don’t have work laptops. Such is the life of smaller agency work though 🤷🏻♀️

You can’t just turn creativity off and on like a light switch. Sometimes your best ideas come to you in the most unlikely places and at the most unlikely times. Remote work allows flexibility to capture those sparks of brilliance regardless of time or space.

Absolutely agree with your approach, John. Investing in remote work not only enhances creativity but also improves the overall well-being of the team. Redirecting funds from office space to employee benefits and better pay is a forward-thinking strategy that many companies could learn from. It's inspiring to see how your editing company has embraced this model to foster a more balanced and productive work environment.
