Are we on track to meet our emission reduction targets in the mining industry? In this article, Kit Million Ross discusses the complexities surrounding emission reduction efforts within the mining sector. With climate change at the forefront of global concerns, achieving ambitious net-zero targets by 2050 has become a pressing challenge for mining companies. However, recent reports suggest that some companies may need help in meeting their interim targets, raising questions about industry progress. The lack of standardized reporting frameworks further complicates efforts to assess progress and identify areas for improvement accurately. Yet, amidst these challenges, there are opportunities for progress. The International Council of Metals and Minerals (ICMM), a leading force, is spearheading efforts to enhance reporting standards and address scope 3 emissions, recognizing the importance of collaboration across the value chain. Innovation, collaboration, and regulatory support will be crucial as we move towards net-zero targets. By encouraging transparency and embracing collective action, the mining sector can play a pivotal role in combatting climate change and building a more sustainable future. **Exploring the Depths of Green Transition: Insights from "The War Below"** There is an intricate balance between the pursuit of essential minerals for green energy and the profound challenges of mining. These minerals, pivotal for technologies like electric vehicles, are at the heart of our energy transition, yet their extraction raises significant environmental, cultural, and geopolitical concerns. The demand for copper alone is set to match the total produced throughout history in the next 25 years. This stark statistic underscores the urgent need for a sustainable approach to mineral extraction. The question of where these minerals are mined—domestically or abroad—brings forward concerns about national security, environmental impact, and the geopolitical chess game of resource control. Scheyder's exploration goes beyond the surface, presenting the complex web of values and interests that intersect in the mining debate. From the protection of unique natural habitats to the economic aspirations of local communities, "The War Below" invites readers to navigate the moral and practical dilemmas of supporting green energy while safeguarding our planet and its cultures. #GreenEnergy #SustainableMining #mining #copper #EnergyTransition

Geological Society Energy Transition Webinar: What role will mining have in the circular economy? https://lnkd.in/enxijUwX As is increasingly acknowledged, the race to net zero will involve a significant uptick in metal supply, which in the short term will be overwhelmingly sourced from mining. However, a long term goal embodied in many governments' critical minerals strategies is the development of a circular economy whereby production and consumption of such metals will increasingly come from recycling and reuse. But is such a circular economy possible, and what will it look like? And what would the role of mining be in this model, and of geoscience in enabling and supporting it? Thursday 30th May 1-2pm - free to register. https://lnkd.in/enxijUwX Panellists: Tobias Kind-Rieper, Global Lead Mining & Metals, WWF Eva Marquis, Postdoctoral Researcher, Camborne School of Mine Gavin Mudd, Director, UK Critical Minerals Intelligence Centre Lucy Smith, Head of Transformation, Materials Processing Institute #circulareconomy #mining #responsibleresources The Geological Society
