But it’s also important to help them develop independence, so they can grow into confident and capable adults. So let them take risks. Trying new things that encourage physical activity won’t just help them grow strong, it will help grow their confidence. It can be scary to watch your kids take risks, but it’s important for them to learn how to push themselves and try new things. So don’t be afraid to encourage them to take on new challenges, even if they might fail. And remember, it’s a process. It’s okay if there are setbacks along the way. Open-ended questions are those that need more than a yes or no answer. Feeling Badly Stuck Things aren’t great always. However, if they continue to be not so great for a long time, it gives rise to a feeling of being Badly Stuck. Actions do not seem to change the situation. Moreso, the others in it, do not care about you being badly stuck. If in such situation, just trudge along. Just keep your head at the right place, have positive thoughts and do not do anything that will make situation worse. Things always change for the better, it might take a bit long sometimes. How we underestimate the capability of children. When we consistently do for children the things they can do themselves, we are not empowering them in any way, rather, we underestimate their ability to do those things. Let them try, let them make mistakes, so they can learn and grow. When you over-function for your child, you are not setting him up to be an independent child who can navigate through life without running back to you always, and here are my reasons… When the child goes to school, will you be there with him? How about teaching him interpersonal skills? When the child gets into a brawl with friends, will you be there to settle both parties? How about teaching him negotiation skills…social skills? Will you always apply your problem solving skills to get him out of tough situations? How about teaching him to think critically? Will your child be stranded because he is not equipped with basic life skills? Will you be making calls to get their laundry, cooking and cleaning done for them always? When will they begin to think for themselves? How will they make decisions? Dear Parent, if you truly want to empower your child, give them the opportunity to do what they are capable of doing, age appropriately, except you want to be their personal assistant for life, which can be a very draining position to be in as a parent. 4 Suggestions You Can Try As a Parent to Increase Your Child’s Confidence: 1. Listen to your child when they express their thoughts and feelings and not necessarily problem-solve for them. Most of the time, kids want to be heard and understood. For example, “That must feel crappy,” or “I get misunderstood or not liked.” 2. Give your child choices like, “You can have five more minutes to complete your video game or five more minutes to add to bath time/storytime/coloring time,” etc. 3. Teach your child the difference between expressing their feelings and needs via aggression versus assertiveness. For example, aggression would look like, “Give me back my toy, or I will break yours.” Versus assertiveness, “If you don’t give me back my toy, we will not play this game again,” and then walking away to engage in another activity with another friend or solo. 4. Do not run to the rescue to solve your child’s problems if the issue is age-appropriate for them to solve on their own.
