Register now for Compassionate Decision-Making in Medical Social Work, live interactive webinar with Johnna Marcus, LICSW. This course will explore how social workers can develop compassionate decision-making skills in various medical social work settings and scenarios. Specific skills in working with interdisciplinary teams in a medical setting will be discussed. Illness specific social work considerations and ways to identify support systems will be explored. Specific emphasis on working with patients who identify as BIPOC will also be explored. Emphasis on the impact of addictions and psychiatric conditions will be examined within the setting of various medical situations and needs. Finally, participants will discuss how social workers can gain respect in a highly specialized medical setting and gain confidence as providers. A couple nights ago, I met with a group of doctors, physician assistants, and nurse practitioners exploring new ways of seeing ourselves in medicine. Some of what we experienced: *How the title of Doctor can separate us from connecting with our patients. *How it can be difficult in the clinical setting to find ways to tell patients what would really help them heal. *How it can be healing for us in the clinical setting to find ways to tell patients what would really help them heal. *How our model of anatomy restricts how we officially see people. *How a group like this, talking about who we are beyond our titles, feels like coming home. *How being uniquely yourself (for example, by doing a handstand for a child admitted to the hospital) can be scary and deeply joyful. *How opening our hearts in gratitude for each other can reveal deep meaning and connection.
