Boarding in the Emergency Department is not only bad for patients, but also for our communities. The downstream effects in communities of ED boarding often goes overlooked. More boarding means increased wall times for #ems which leads to reduced resources available to their town, increased response times, and increased need for mutual aid (with the inherent increased response times). When seconds count, help may be minutes away. Or longer. It's not an ER problem, it's a system and community problem, and in Boston I know of at least one case where prehospital care and transport for a child was delayed with a negative outcome. Was boarding to blame? I can't say, but I do know there was boarding that day in the local hospitals. More details on boarding in this Forbes article. #emergencymedicine #emergencymedicalservices https://lnkd.in/ePCdVvRi

Were you aware that hospital readmission rates in British Columbia are lower than average, at around 9.4%? This is due to families ensuring that their loved ones receive the necessary care, as failing to do so could result in re-injury and potential readmission to the hospital. While being discharged from the hospital is typically a welcome event, it can also cause additional stress for both the patient and their family. Your loved one will likely have a lengthy recovery period at home, and it is your responsibility to ensure that their home is safe and ready for their return. To help ensure a safe transition back home after a hospital stay, we recommend following our guidelines for transferring seniors safely at home. Read our latest blog to learn how you can support this transition: https://lnkd.in/gF-fG5du #herohomecare #happyhumans #healthycommunities #peoplecomefirst #heroesnotjustcaregivers

🌟 Daily Dose of Health Insights July 22🌟 🔹 Today's Highlight: Child Safety Alert in British Columbia: Preventing Falls and Water Incidents "BC Children’s Hospital in British Columbia has issued a warning following a significant number of incidents involving children falling from windows and balconies, as well as accidental drownings/near drownings. So far this year, the hospital has treated 12 children for falls from windows and balconies, potentially surpassing the 14 incidents recorded in the entirety of 2023. Additionally, three children have been treated for water-related incidents. These injuries can have devastating consequences, affecting both children and their families. Dr. Meghan Gilley, an emergency physician at BC Children’s Hospital, emphasized the unexpected nature of these accidents and the emotional toll they take. To prevent such accidents, families are advised to closely supervise children around windows, balconies, and bodies of water. Safety measures include securing windows with guards and locks, ensuring windows do not open wide enough for a child to fall through, and maintaining constant supervision near any water bodies. It's also recommended that children wear properly fitting flotation devices when near water. The hospital stresses the importance of these precautions to ensure that children can safely enjoy the summer months. More detailed guidance on summer safety can be found on the BC Children’s Hospital website." 🔎 Why Stay Updated? In the rapidly evolving field of healthcare, staying informed is crucial.
