How do you get out of sales if you're stuck in it? Here are some tips... A lot of people take a sales job as their first job out of college out of necessity. They may have a degree in something completely different, but can't secure an entry-level role and they need to start making money. The issue is that once you're in the sales world, it's actually pretty difficult to get out of it. Try this: ✅ SET PROPER EXPECTATIONS - chances are that you won't make as much money initially, and that you'll be interviewing for entry-level roles. If you write a cover letter, then make sure to let the interviewer know that you understand that. ✅ TALK TO YOUR CURRENT BOSS - if your boss is not a piece of crap, then he/she will do what they can to help you. The easiest way to move into a different role is to move within your current company. Be honest about what you want to do, and your boss can probably help you talk to the right people. ✅ CREATE YOUR OWN EXPERIENCE IN YOUR CURRENT JOB - if you want to move into a data analyst role, then do data work as a salesperson. Learn about CMS, SQL, and other necessary techs. Add a chunk of customer data into a database (Airtable/Sheets, etc.) and think through a trend that would be valuable to understand (be careful with this data as it probably belongs to your company). Create a way to track and measure the trend. The goal here is to show hiring managers that you can think of and execute ways to make them money or save them money. ✅ REACH OUT TO COMPANIES THAT WOULD FIND YOUR INDEPENDENT PROJECT VALUABLE - going back to the data analyst role, send some info about your trend and findings to similar companies and verticals (again, don't share specific company data). You can say something like "Hi, I've been in [industry] for 6 years, and recently developed a way to track [your project]. I found your open Data Analyst role, and would like to interview for it. Here's how I found this trend [talk about your process and tools]. I also have a sales background. This is actually very helpful as a Data Analyst because [insert some advantages]." ✅ TAILOR YOUR RESUME - focus on the aspects of your job that are applicable to the role you want. If you want to get into Marketing, then make your bullet points about brand, ROI on trade shows, LinkedIn engagement numbers, start a newsletter. If you want to get into Finance, learn about P&L statements and talk about specific numbers for how you saved or made the company money.
