The American Public Gardens Association (APGA) is excited to launch two new membership levels this year! The Allied Membership and Student Membership. The Allied Membership welcomes non-garden, non-profit organizations to join the Association. APGA encourages nonprofit organizations that champion or work with public gardens to join to enhance the work of their organizations and staff members. Allied members who qualify must hold an IRS 501 (c)3 non-profit determination or equivalent non-US designation. Organizations defined as public gardens, botanical gardens, arboretums, or parks do not qualify for this membership. Regarding the Student Membership, college students must be enrolled as full- or part-time students in a compulsory or higher education system. They must provide an active college or university email address and provide current course registration. Students will need to requalify annually. Students also cannot be a full-time employee in the public garden industry. #APGABoston24 #APGAConference #APGA #PublicGarden #PublicGardens #GardenConference #AmericanPublicGardensAssociation #Boston #gardeneducation #gardentips #networking #greenindustry

If making medical school tuition free becomes a trend in philanthropy, I am all for it. I am even more hopeful that making college tuition free through philanthropy is possible. When I taught English at the local county community college, I had plenty of students with multiple jobs, who were juggling classes as well as family responsibilities, because they wanted to get a degree so they could get a better paying job. I was always amazed that they were able to do their schoolwork while juggling everything else-- and they shouldn't have to carry all those burdens at once. Great article on community colleges and philanthropy. Community colleges are our nation’s greatest engines of economic and social mobility, and a driving force of local and regional economies. Community colleges enroll 30% of all higher education students yet receive only 1.5% of the $58 billion in philanthropic support to higher education. Community college alumni work in every industry and are distinguished civic and corporate leaders throughout the country. Philanthropists looking to make a transformational impact should take a closer look at community colleges. #communitycollege #philanthropy
